June Hatch-A-Long

Good news bad news... Bad news: our lone white chick of our broody hatch continues to have navel problems... It hatched yesterday and had a little bit of unabsorbed yolk. Mama pecked at it and made it bleed, so I dusted with styptic powder and set in the incubator until dark. The navel was a brown clump, so I cut most of the brown off and set under mom in the dark. Checked this morning, and there was a brown blob again, which mom pecked and made bleed again.... Dusted with styptic power again and set in incubator. I think I’ll set up the brooder and place it in there for the day. Maybe eating and walking around will help the navel heal? Since the navel really stands out against its yellow down, I’m also thinking about spraying it’s butt with blue kote to hide the navel, then place with mom again tonight? Anyone have other suggestions?

Good news: the egg that has been dented and in our incubator for a week just hatched! I can’t believe it: miracle chick!!! I’m planning to put it and the white chick under mom tonight...
I use Blu Kote to hide tons of stuff, but on something that small I'd spray a little into a bottle cap first and use a q-tip to dab it where I need it to be.
Hard to cover the face and eyes on itty bittys.:D

Two that pipped last night hatched sometime in the early morning.

One hatched white once again. Is it possible the white leghorn seed was still in her? This is ridongculous! They’ve been separated since at least late February to early March. 10 weeks is clearly not enough to flush it outta their system:rant
What was the chick supposed to be?

I stained my fingers with it last time I used it and had to go to formal dinner dressed up with purple people eater fingers 😂 Everyone kept asking what happened so I had to tell them.

3 of 4 eggs are internally pipped hatching upright in the turner (unplugged).

My bantam brahmas were all DIS besides 1 last month so have 2 of 2 be internally pipped is a huge deal.

Cant wait to see how they hatch in the turner and the mess it will make. I’m hoping this will be my new way of hatching!
Wow, interesting concept! How do you clean the turner?

No idea. This is the first time I’ve done it. My turner is easy to clean I think though because the rails come off.

Ill do a post on here with how it works out. I learned this from someone who have been hatching 50+ years.

I’m using a ridiculous amount of blue kote in the main coop due to a feather picking problem. I have the spray and was thinking if the whole back half of the chick was dark colored, then the dark umbilicus wouldn’t stand out from the yellow fluff...

Woohoo, I hatched BCM and Whiting True blue on my sons birthday in January and they’re starting to lay the week of my birthday!!!

What’s the advantage over laying on their sides? 36 Guinea eggs are in turner and going into lockdown today!

Yes. Half the time I use BluKote it's to hide something. FYI...it comes in a liquid form too in a bottle with a daubber, but I usually stick a q-tip in the bottle when needed to keep the daubber clean. Or suck some up in a syringe, or a paint brush.... or..or..or...

Awww, I swear, half the time I read your posts I don't know if I'm going to laugh, tear up (from the good stories, not the losses) or faint from cuteness!
Happy early, on time, or belated Birthday!! What cute little cadbury eggs.
