June Hatch-A-Long

Just had my first Marans hatch (the malpositioned one and all by itself too!). S/he is a huge chick, but very lively! I was a little worried after hearing about all the trouble some folks have had with Marans and the fact that I couldn't see well what was going on in the egg so I monitored just by air cell development. A second chick has just started zipping - my darkest egg. Two more have pipped today, so I don't expect them until tomorrow and the last egg is cheeping and wiggling around. Looks like I might get lucky with these ones and the risk will be worth it :)

I’d rather use pine shavings. You just turn them and they’re way cleaner. I couldn’t imagine using puppy pads or paper towels. They looking disgusting after 5 seconds!

Pine shavings once they are dirty you can put in the compost pile to make soil for the next year's gardens. Puppy pads are not good for compost and anything that creates waste (trash) I do not like to use
True, but the dust from them irritates my allergies and asthma when I have to brood in the house. Outside? Yep, shavings for sure! And I use leaves and shredded paper for the big coop when I need bedding.
I'm all about a smaller footprint and I use rain barrels and a clothesline, recycle and reuse more things than one can imagine...but if I can't breath I can't be a good steward. Burning some puppy pads in the burn barrel is pittance in light of all the other things that I do. Including making my own natural soaps, lotions, cleaners, and laundry detergents.:D

I take a very "green living" approach here as well when we can but I admit that I use puppy pads under my pine pellets because it's so much easier to lift it all out and toss it. I also use press n seal plastic wrap on top of my heat plates for easy clean up. Lol, I guess chicks aren't super earth friendly at my house because I like easy clean up. Fortunately the pads and pine pellets last a while before needing to be swapped out.
I like to put a few layers of newspaper under the bedding for easy lift out when it's time to clean, and before I ever put any bedding down, I tape a garbage bag or piece of durable plastic down so when all the chicks are out I can gather it all up knapsack style and carry it to the compost pile.
I've not tried the pelleted bedding for chicks, though I did use it a lot for grown chickens and my other animals. I LOVE how long it lasts and how much less dust there is vs regular shavings.

We need to do our rain barrels and do our laundry line.

I don’t make laundry detergent because it doesn’t clean my husbands work clothes good enough.

Yeah, it's not the strongest soap in the world, but for every day stuff it's great. Have you tried adding vinegar or washing soda to boost cleaning power in the laundry? I used to have to do that to DH's icky work clothes every week.

Yeah he gets oil and stuff on his clothes and the oxi clean detergent is the only thing that cleans it. I’ve tried vinegar and washing soda. He comes home and blows his nose and it’s black 🤢 He works on a very dirty environment lol

1 pheasant egg pipped last night....wrong end of course. I think almost every hatch of mine this year has started with a pip at the wrong end.

USPS is playing games with me! I got a notice from ebay that said I had a new arrival estimate (later than I was told before) on one of the sets of eggs I just ordered, so I checked. USPS's tracking system is telling me 2 different things.....that they are out for delivery today and that they just arrived at the closest sorting facility (again)??? Hopefully the mail gets here soon, before I have to leave to deliver the last puppy (not counting the one we chose to keep) to it's new owner.

Your a girl after my own heart! :love We make a lot of our own goodies too and my husband thinks I'm nuts, but I'm ok with that. Lol, he's the one that married me. :lau

Pics of the puppy you’re keeping? Is it male or female?
