June Hatch-A-Long

That’s what I do with my surplus. I keep a few and friends them out. The rest I sell to others.

How are sales where you live?
People are pretty nuts for chicks right now! Think that’s universal because of the pandemic, trying to be more self-sufficient if the food supply chain is affected. I sold my extra silkies and Marans from my last hatch last month on craigslist that I posted on a Sunday morning, by Sunday afternoon they were all sold. I put lots of photos in the post and was very descriptive, I think that helped. From your thread posts @FortCluck looks like you have most of your chicks sold before they hatch!😊

the hawk was back this morning but since there were no babies to get, he just hung out on the horse round pen and did his regular hunting. When I headed out the broody that lost all her babies yesterday was squawking but I think it’s just cause she saw him.

it’s a little bit like those photos of the Lion and the Zebra at the same watering hole, t, it is what it is. I’m convinced he keeps bad adult-killing hawks away, so we march on. I’m concerned for the one seven week old chick that I have with the other broody mama, but, that mama is a beast so I’m hopeful. She no longer actively cares for the chick however she does allow it with her everywhere and let’s it cuddle up. She doesn’t click for it or fend off other flock mates from its space at all. I feel bad it’s by itself but mama seems to not be kicking it off so far and no one picks on it and once it starts laying it’ll be part of the flock.

broody mama has returned to normalcy less than 24 hours after losing the babies. She squawked most of yesterday incessantly but stopped at dusk. She has always been the hen to monitor the nest boxes and she has been on duty today, jointing in to every egg song.

circle of life is rough sometimes.

Yes you almost have to be like a car salesman when selling chicks. The only ones that haven’t sold are the Easter Eggers, but sales are picking up again. The market was quite saturated, but I don’t think many people hatch monthly like I do. My quail usually sell within 5 minutes of advertising them.

Whatever doesn’t sell I’m growing to POL or laying then I’ll sell them for double like $10-$15 per pullet depending on the breed. I can’t think of anyone who wouldn’t buy a layer in the fall so either way I’m selling them.

Some I keep until they are 20ish weeks and see if I truly like the looks of them. If not I sell them usually with their egg pic because most of mine lay at 20 weeks.

Welcome to the world little maran

I have not had had any Cuckoo Marans, but my guess is that the Black Copper Marans are more expensive because they lay the darkest eggs out of all the Marans.
How come everyone says BCM are expensive? Look local if possible anyone who is buying them... I paid $12 for a dozen BCM eggs from a great breeding line.
