Is black always dominant?
I got 7 silver (grey, blue...whatever they are called when still fuzzy) chicks from my hatch. A Black Australorp is the daddy of all the chicks and the moms of the silvers are 1 Americana and 3 different Sapphire Gems.
Does that mean my roo only has one black gene?

He's inky black with the green sheen and in certain light a purple sheen.

It was always dominant with my BJG. He was all black genes nothing else. His genetics caused all black chicks no matter what I bred with him.

My Deathlayer has tons of colors because his offspring is never the same color.

Found out why the chicks fell out of the nesting box with Pants. They fell through a tiny gap between the wall and nesting box she’s in. I shoved a big piece of folded up cardboard box in the gap so it won’t happen again.

I gave Pants 3 more chicks so she has 4 now. She’s so proud of herself.

Mrs tweedy has 1 chick so far. And the duck has 8 duck eggs it’s sitting on. I took the chicken eggs from her and reached under Chicken Little and Mrs. Tweedy to get the rest of the duck eggs.

Chicken Little has nothing so far, but I’ll give her a few chicks tonight.

A local breeder here sells them for $3 per egg. I’m not interested in the breed so I haven’t bought any. I have a thing against all black chickens or black chickens period because I want colorful chicks not all black. Black ALWAYS is dominant and black chicks don’t sell as good plus I like eye candy. Only black chicken I have now is my black Cochin, but she had green sheen so she is excused from my dislike My dislike started when I was crossing breeds with my BJG. Every chick was black and had zero wow effect.

I have a black mixed-breed rooster who is absolutely stunning. He ended up with markings (once mature) that I wouldn't believe in a painting. I would never, ever have guessed he'd end up looking like that. I don't carry around a cell phone, but I'll try to remember to get some photos later on today.

Not all black chicks are equal... I know that, but when my BJG was in my flock, they never changed colors.

I have the same dislike for white (and white/black splash). They're so boring! They don't sell well either, since "everyone" has at least one white egg layer already. I'm starting to loose interest in my buff orpington mixes too, as they all turn out the same...

What I love most about hatching is the variety, patterns and surprises, which is why I only breed mixes now.

Do your Buff Orpington mixes all come out in shades of buff? I hatched 9 of my barnyard crosses (buff orpington roo over EE, Australorpe, Barred Rock, RIR, Buckeye hens) and I ended up with 1 black chick with barring on his breast and 8 chicks that are all shades of buff (some with little hints of white or black....but mostly buff). I find them to be pretty uninteresting coloring.

See that’s what I didn’t like about the BJG. Every chick came out black no color changes or anything. It became boring and customers wanted more than just black chicks.

Get a Deathlayer! Their chicks come out amazing when you cross them. My last cross Polish Deathlayers are all different colors not one is identical. I’m loving crossing my Deathlayer with all my different purebreds. I haven’t sold any of the chicks yet or put them for sale. I will see how well they sell soon enough.

I wish you were closer. I’d let you choose whichever you wanted. I’m hopefully going to keep 2 or 3. I’ll record when they start laying and what color they lay for future reference.

After changing my chick order I think 5 times (the nice ladies in the hatchery office were VERY patient with me), I have decided on cuckoo marans, bielefelder, blue laced red Wyandotte and speckled Sussex. I have ordered enough for friends too and will sell any left over. My current incubating eggs are not doing so well this time around, I had blood rings in all of the batches: ONE self blue ameraucana looks good, ONE birchen marans looks good, 4 of the silver laced orpingtons look good and now 3 of the grocery store eggs look good! So far the grocery store eggs are looking the best which I actually find quite funny!

There are colors I like more than others and I don't mind some black in my flock. However I do like a colorful flock and am working to get towards the flock I had before I moved the farm. Pretty sure I had one of every color or type, but I had to reduce drastically for the move.

I would have never thought a black roo could be so stunning and beautiful so am surprised mine is. So much so that I am thinking of quilting him.
Well, not him, but an art quilt in the likeness of him.
...if he doesn't turn mean that is.
