June Hatch-A-Long

I want to get alpacas to put with my chickens. They’re supposed to be good flock guards.
They are not, I can assure you. Llamas can be if they are from a guarding line. Some have the instincts and some don't. A rare alpaca may have the instinct, but they are not as big or tough as some might think. Adult females can be around 90 to 150 pounds. Intact males might make a decent guard and while slightly larger, they are something you do not want around, and geldings don't usually have the drive to be gaurd-ish.

Received my Meyers duckling order and on top of it taking three days to get to me, 5 were dead on arrival and I didn't get the breeds in the amounts I had ordered. I am sad for those little souls. So far no one at Meyers has responded but they have been great so far with customer service.

Here are some pictures of the Bielefelder eggs I ordered.

Oh sorry to hear that. Mine are ok. The Partridge Rocks were have problems with messy bottoms the first 4 or 5 days but have straighten that out. They seem like very very slight chicks to begin with so perhaps not a very robust line. Doesn't help that the RR are double the size and double the vigor.... making them seem even more puny. JG are doing ok.

What breed(s) are your chicks and which ones did you lose?
I had 5 spitzhaunen only 2 left, 8 faverolles only 6 left and 5 sapphire splash with 4 left. I don’t know why they are passing. I check for ugly butt every night. I guess it’s just survival of the fittest.

I second this. I have had both Llamas and Alpacas. My alpacas were finicky, fragile animals that needed protection. My llama was a great personality, resilient, protective, awesome! Would have another llama, won't be getting anymore Alpacas

The alpaca farm next to us uses them for that purpose and it works for them. I want emus or ostrich as well.

Hmm, I wonder if it's an off year for robust chicks? It's been crazy the last ten years seeing the demand explosion so perhaps that has led to overbreeding to meet the demands, thus weakened lines across the board.

Sorry about the ducks. Hopefully Meyers will respond quickly.
Are those pics the seller sent?
Do you mind sharing your seller? In case my eggs arrive a mess I'd like to find a different seller.
