They are not, I can assure you. Llamas can be if they are from a guarding line. Some have the instincts and some don't. A rare alpaca may have the instinct, but they are not as big or tough as some might think. Adult females can be around 90 to 150 pounds. Intact males might make a decent guard and while slightly larger, they are something you do not want around, and geldings don't usually have the drive to be gaurd-ish.
I had 5 spitzhaunen only 2 left, 8 faverolles only 6 left and 5 sapphire splash with 4 left. I don’t know why they are passing. I check for ugly butt every night.
I guess it’s just survival of the fittest.
I second this. I have had both Llamas and Alpacas. My alpacas were finicky, fragile animals that needed protection. My llama was a great personality, resilient, protective, awesome! Would have another llama, won't be getting anymore Alpacas
The alpaca farm next to us uses them for that purpose and it works for them. I want emus or ostrich as well.

I’d buy mine from this farm. I yell “LLMAMA LLAMA DING DING” every time by their house because they have llamas too and they always look at me
think they know it’s me by now.
