June Hatch-A-Long

Thanks I’ll look into selling them or who knows maybe I’ll keep some since I only have 3 olive egger hens. We shall see. But for sure after this batch I will wait before setting more eggs.

The temp is getting hotter and I’ve had bad experiences with chicks in hot weather.
Really? I love hot weather and chicks.

For giggles I candled my lavender Americanna eggs I set very early Friday morning (we are talking like 3am setting time). I wasn’t expecting to see anything in them but did see what seemed like red lines in some and true spider veins in 4 of the seven.

nothing in any of the death layers yet. Not going to upset if none of the surprise eggs don’t develop but hopefully some of the ones I paid for will.
Deathlayer eggs seem to develop later. Wait till days 7-10.

I will. It was a just for giggles look at them. I was surprised to see something in the americanna eggs at all. The Death Layers went in a day later so I will do an official candle this weekend.
My Giant Deathlayers it was day 10 before I could even see anything. I can’t wait until they hatch! It’ll be Saturday hopefully

That’s true I guess less heat lamp/brooder plate time is needed since it will be so hot during the day and night.

Last August I lost around 10 chicks (half store bought half hatched by a broody) so I don’t have too much confidence in the middle of summer.

But we did order some chicks and guineas that are being mailed August 😱 So that’s also another reason I will not be hatching this summer. I want all my attention on those chicks/keets.

I could see why store bought would die. I have always lost chicks when I get them from the store. It’s usually just trauma and stress from shipping. Plus the stores really aren’t that attentive to them.

I have two of them out of 70 eggs in the bator. Yup it happens, I don't do anything different for it until I place it in lockdown. I make sure the cell is up.

Thanks. I figured it wasn’t a big deal if it was just one out of 12. Now if it was all of them I’d be worried 😂

I know in my last hatch I learned that sometimes they develop on half the egg while the other half is clear. Like side to side not top and bottom. And they still hatched fine and are alive and well.

These ones were actually taken by my dog 😭

He’s really good with grown chickens and guineafowl but for some reason sees chicks and keets 2 months and under as play things that turn into treats. Which I learned last summer. Now I keep them in secure pens and don’t let them free range until they’re 6 months or older.

ETA: the ones that hatched died because our neighbor who was helping us clean our shop opened the door wide open and the brooder was hit with direct sunlight. That day we just so happened to have been away for 2-3 hrs and came back to dead chicks 😢

So Cyan, (broody hen, I put eggs under her yesterday), was broody a few days ago, and we don't have any roos, so I got her some fertile eggs from a farm up here in Maine. I put them under her yesterday, and now she won't sit on them. Although I know she at least sits on them at night in the nesting box. She still puffs up when I go near her, and when I check on her she goes into the nesting box. I was just wondering if I should leave them in there hoping she'll lay on them, or order an incubator now.

Any way you can candle the eggs in a few days when it’s dark? Then you can see if they are developing. I’m all for a broody doing their thing. Maybe it’s because I’ve been using the bator and I want a break lol
