June Hatch-A-Long

jmns how are things in HI now? We have a friend over there and she says she is back to normal. She panicked when there were all those lines for costco, and we sent her and her family $600 worth of rice and supplies.

We live on the big Island, supplies have been a little limited at times but no real problems. Things are slowly going back to normal but we still have the 14 day quarantine in place for anybody coming from outside of Hawaii through the end of June for now. Masks are required out in public. Beaches opened over memorial day weekend and people went nuts! There was a small spike in cases after that but nothing major. Hawaii has been really good at contact tracing all cases of coronavirus so we’ve been able to keep things limited. We have a very fragile health system here that’s why they’ve been trying to limit tourists. I am blessed to be able to work from home so that has been awesome. Normally work part time in California so normally a lot of traveling! Plenty of time for me to incubate eggs!

Marans and Orpington eggs just arrived! Beautifully packaged and air cells actually look really good. Eggs also appear to be quite fresh. These are from a local breeder but still had to come overnight in the mail.

Chicks keep you busy for sure, I have these 4 currently still in the house...View attachment 2180969
they are the babies of my avatar, black ones plus a tan friend from the hatch just before theirs. The tan one was kinda shrimpy, so it went in with these chicks. I have done that with my other hatches, if one chick was not as robust, I would put it in with the next batch. The batch before this one had about 19 chicks, and it was not good for a shrimp. This group is more mellow.

Good guess, the dad was a maran, and the mom, blue frizzle.

Where did your eggs come from, HI?

The marans and orpingtons from a local breeder, the ameraucanas and silkies from the mainland. Have to get a permit and that can take weeks. Was why I had to wait 6 weeks for this last set of ameraucanas. Hard to find the smaller hobby and heritage breeders that will ship to Hawaii and I prefer not to use the big hatcheries.
If I ever get any self blue ameraucanas to hatch, I have a big wait list for any I do not keep as no one else has any here.
