June Hatch-A-Long

I realize they are still young, but what's your impression of them? How are they growing out for you? Especially compared to the BCM which I'm familar with. Where did your eggs come from?

I am liking them quite a bit. I think they are growing really fast as they are bigger than my BCM's. They are pretty calm compared to some of my other chicks (Sapphire Gem/Lavender Orpington cross, Silver Spitzhauben, and barnyard cross chicks), but my BCM's are calmer. The cockerel hasn't shown any aggression at all, he seems pretty mellow. My BCM chicks are more curious about me and come up to me more than the beile's do, but I think that will change as I continue to work with them. Overall, I really like them so far! I got my eggs off of ebay.

A pic of my pheasants.

They are soooooo tiny compared to my week old Wheaten Marans!

A lot of excitement here just now. A grouse got into the pen where the broody and her week old baby are, so the hen was trying to fight it, but it couldn’t get out and she had it cornered. The dogs got excited and started trying to grab the grouse once my brother got it out of the pen, so then we had to catch them and put them away, and when we came back we couldn’t find the baby. We spent probably 10 minutes looking for her and finally found her hiding in a hay bale outside the pen.

I keep questionable ones until lockdown, if there is no obvious signs of rotten-ness. Otherwise toss.

I just ordered some Bielefelder hatching eggs off Ebay. I will be joining the July hatch along shortly and can post pictures if you'd like. I also ordered some Crevecoeur hatching eggs.

I am anticipating massive failures in the Legbar eggs I just set and would like to have some back ups. Now to find myself a backup incubator in case the Legbars actually develop . However, there is nothing on the market right now. Anyone have any suggestions on the available incubators? I would prefer to avoid anything over 200 dollars. Wish I could find another Nurture Right 360. I love mine!

I’m going to put a few chicks under one of my broodies... she has two eggs I’m going to pop in the bator... will she know if I stick 3 chicks under her that they’re not from the eggs😂 Can chickens count?
I remember that some people think they can count to three, but I think you’ll be fine. (As in they can tell what one is, what two is, and three or more is all the same.

I just bought a 1602N circulated air hovabator for $95 plus tax on incubator warehouse (no egg turner). I think the kit with the egg roller and thermometer was $150.

I was browsing the Bielefelders on ebay today because I'm interested in them. Would you mind sharing who you ordered from and how the eggs look when they arrive?

I don't know anything about this one, but maybe you could do ship to store on it. I got the NR360 through TSC too but had to check the site often then got it shipped to store.
