Day 21 hatch day today for me! Nothing but a little rocking in the incubator, but started off with a tragedy in the broody box

. Went to check on the girls this morning (I have 2 broodies, one on each egg). One of my broodies was up and asking to come out of the pen (she does this every a.m. Then hope back on the nest after about 20 mins), so I figured no hatching activity. I was wrong. Looked in her box, and there was a squished mass of egg with a little head poking out. I scooped it up right away, figuring it was dead (it was quite cold), but then she gasped! I ran her inside and fired up my Brinsea mini as a hospital incubator (it warms up fast). There is quite a bit of blood and a tiny bit of yolk, so she is obviously early. She was internally pipped yesterday, so I figure she pipped, which weakened the shell, and my inexperienced hen then squished her. As she is warming up, she is breathing a bit faster ( about 5 breaths/min when I first found her, WAY too low). But otherwise limp and motionless. I pulled most of the shell off, as it was broken and bleeding, but left the veins/yolk attached in hopes she will absorb more. I have little hope she will make it, what with squishing, hypothermia, blood loss, and risk of infection, but I have to try! My first Cream Legbar hen. Fight girl! (My last hatch was all cockerels!)
