I just asked in the beginners thread.... But I am gonna ask here too...

How many of you'll put the eggs in the incubator on their side, and how many standing up?


I just saw that some people do that (put the eggs standing up, pointy end down). And I am wondering about it, since I have had some malpositioned chicks in the past.

Putting the eggs that way, does it eliminate malpositioning? (And why does my spell check say I spelled that word wrong, how is malpositioned supposed to be spelled? )

On shipped eggs I always hatch upright in an egg carton. But that is due to air cells that are damaged. For eggs not shipped, it is just a preference. Those hatched in cartons seem to leave a much cleaner incubator.

Wow, I've never heard of that happening before!

it was easy to keep track since hers were the only green eggs in the incubator - they were more vigorous and more active than the others by far. They were possibly fresher than the majority of eggs since they were from my own hen so maybe that had something to do with it. I'll have to incubate her "aged" eggs next time with other fresh eggs to compare...sounds like an excuse to hatch again...hahaha

So, has anyone incubated with the eggs standing on the small end, and lost a chick due to malpositioning?

And, if you do it that way, do you lay them on their sides the last three days for the hatch out? Or do you let them hatch out standing up?

When I incubate I start them in cartons and they hatch out in cartons. No losses for me due to malposition. I do cut the bottoms out of the cartons and remove much of the sides so if they pip low they're still above the upper edge of it. I don't have as much experience as many of you others though so keep that in mind. My system is still evolving!

Joining the June hatch-a-long! I have 12 barnyard mix with a few Bantys. I am new to hatching. This is my third attempt. The first time I had 18 eggs, didn't candle, dry incubator - borrowed. Only one chick hatched. April 1st. Second attempt 10 mixed eggs in. Two hatched, one with a problem with yoke not quite absorbed, but doing fine now 2 weeks later. Set my third - and last - hatch attempt on May 15th -

Changed location of the incubator, bought 2 more thermometers (I think the one that came with the incubator is broke! The temp fluctuates all the time and doesn't stay matched up with the 2 I just bought) Thinking this may be one of the reasons for failed hatches. Whatever happens this time is what I'll go with for the summer. I have 4 chicks now, a newly built coop, ready to add to the chick fam!

I'm a city girl living in the country - I don't know much about chickens! I've learned so much from this site and am grateful for it's existence.
My husband and family think I'm nuts. Sounds like from others on this site that that is the norm. Happy to be here.

I guess if you leave them in standing up they can zipper around the sides, lift the top off with their widdo wings and just step out. LOL!! Let me know if that happens. Til then mine are on their sides.
