June Hatch a Long

That's awesome! Great news!
Aww shucks, thanks for the support-- it was so completely random (we happened upon a clutch of eggs in the bushes and my egg eating hen had speared one with her beak so I put them in the nest box, had some mishaps along the way) I cannot believe they are actually hatching..... Now to see if the chicks make it!....

I know I am going batty....lol. I keep going in the room checking for pips hehe. lots of smudges on the bator windows. not much longer now. I just hope most if not all of them hatch. when I candled last they were all pretty active and moving around a lot so I have high hopes. I think I just made a major huge mistake tho. I pointed out to my 5 year old that the eggs were rocking and let her hear them tap and chirp. she is now hovering over the bator waiting for the babies to come out lol.

Hee hee, I have a 6 yr old and a 3 yr old. I have to hide the incubator in the basement and play gatekeeper at the door or no-one would do anything but watch eggs :)

5 eggs in lockdown and 3 under the broody! So excited!!! :) Hoping for some fluffy butts in a few days.

Good luck!!!

and yesterday on day 19 I had 4 hatch out, i have another out and atleast 2 more pips

That is so exciting! Your hatch is off to an good start. Just curious, did your temps run high or were the eggs stored for awhile first? That is a lot of activity for day 19!

Hey all FIRST chicks hatched today! Wow I need zanax too (cept I gotta to go to work for 2 days tommorrow night EEEEKKKK)...
One little chick at 10am and we came home later at noon 2nd chick out and #3 on the way (8 eggs total we will see)-- they are under our young (shes not barely a year old ) hen and my ten year old has handled them like 9 times already and picked up the pipped egg...
I know its best not to ... but she is my chicken tender while I am outa town (hubby really is completely non animal oriented and clumsy as heck)-- Hen is in the coop in a nest box about 3 ft off the ground (long story we tried unsuccessfully to move her twice, so now I am leaving her be)--
I just put a feed and waterer on the floor of the coop and an upside down cardboard box filled with straw (entry hole cut into the side) next to it.... and hoping for the best...

This is soooo amazing though.. Broody hens are the best (luckily we still getting 6 eggs a day from the rest)...

I have had bad luck moving my broodies too, so I left mine in place for this hatch also... Hopefully my first successful attempt with a broody. So funny I was just telling my DH I was thinking of converting an upside-down box into a makeshift ground-level hidey-hole. Great minds think alike!

Speaking of shipped eggs, I wonder has anyone studied the effects of different shipping methods on eggs? I imagine eggs placed on a plane for cross country shipment would be less viable due to the pressure changes, temperature changes, etc. I had eggs shipped to me from in-state, about 4 hours away by car, and it still took 2 days Priority Mail. However, odds are they never left the ground and I think they did very well, 8 out of 14 (and two more probably would have made it if I had been awake to help them out).
My Ameraucanas would have been about 2 hour drive for us. The breeder shipped them and they were package very well, but we got no hatches. The only success I have had is the eggs I picked up from the breeder. I don't think they can take all of the movement in the delivery process. I am sticking to local pick-up only or day olds going forward.

Built this bator a few weeks ago and set 37 eggs. It has went pretty well so far I think. Today is day 18 and looks like one has pipped already which worries me a little. Its addicting! Im already thinking about doing another batch. These will be a mix between an EE roo and EE hen and Buff roo and RIR hens. Should be good egg layers which is all I care about cause my 2 yr old and 4 yr old can gk through some eggs. Now my neighbors are wanting eggs . So I figured out real quick I need to keep about 10 good hens and hatch my own so I can replenish my flock each year. May get some Marans eggs for next hatch.
