Advise as follows................................Take a deep breath.................Does anyone here have any advice on hatching with a broody hen? This is our first trying hatching out eggs, we had a broody Buff Orp so we ordered up some eggs. We are on day 22 and nothing yet. We candled at day 7 and day 15 and everything looked like it was going along well. I know with the incubators the temp & humidity levels are really important so is the weather important with a broody? I assume she is handling the temp, but the humidity here has been 90-100% for the past couple weeks. Could that kill them? Or delay them? How long should I let her keep sitting? Also, now I'm reading you shouldn't be touching the eggs at all - the past day or two I've been going out and checking every couple hours cuz i'm so excited lol. I hope I didn't hurt things doing that. Any advice? Your little hatchers are all so adorable!
Thanks so much! I marked it on the calendar so I'm certain of the day - but she is holding tight. We actually started with 13 eggs - 2 broke and she kept kicking out 2 more. We kept putting them back under her and she kept kicking them out. we decided to candle them and they were not viable. How do they know these things??? So crazy! I will just trust momma hen knows best and try to leave her alone. thanks!Advise as follows................................Take a deep breath...................and just leave her alone..... Hens are sooooo smart.![]()
I am thinking if she is still interested then your eggs are likely OK. Hens, generally will toss bad eggs out of their nest.........( how do they know)![]()
I don't know how you counted your days....it is possible you could be a day off............Easy to figure out.........if you set on a Friday.....count ahead three Fridays.
I doubt you caused a problem handling the eggs You learned not to next time but I really doubt you caused any harm. Little guys are probably in there thinking....
" for pity sake, let me sleep"
I have not had the high heat experience so hope someone lese will chime in. My hen pulled chest feathers out ...........I assume to regulate heat?
I leave eggs for a week. Then find a couple of day olds for an unsuccessful hatch. I have only had this happen one time. I read the chicks imprint the first four days.....
so it is important to be certain of their age.....................
Good Luck..............
