I thought so too!
I don't think I ever posted what breed I am hatching out. I am Hatching Austra Whites.
I've read on here that you should watch them for two days and they stay on the nest even through the night then they are broody for real and not just practicing. I've also read to just give them a few eggs to start just in case she quits? How cool to get a broody! Of course she went after you set eggs! Lol! Murphys Law! Are you going to let her do a different batch or sneak in some of your bator eggs? Can you do that after a week in?
If it were me, I would watch her for 3 days or so and make sure she stays sitting day and night. If she does and you want to try slipping eggs under her then go for it. I had hatchery stock Welsummers and Cochins that have gone broody. My welsummer sat and was an amazing mom, but that Cochin, sat for 2 weeks then jumped off. So be prepared to put the eggs in an incubator, just in case. Good Luck!
Whoa! My family thinks I am crazy for having 75 egg in the incubator. You have waaaaay more than that.
I just started incubating my first batch of quails ever a few days ago. How do you know if anything is growing in them? I can only see into like 3, but even in those I can't see well enough to tell if there is life...
I was originally just going to only set 50, but since I had the eggs as well as room in the incubator, I simply couldn't resist.![]()
To candle the eggs, I use DH's duty torch (he's a police officer). It doesn't get hot at all, but it's powerful enough to see veins and tiny heartbeats even through the the shells of dark olive eggs and Marans eggs. http://www.niteize.com/product/INOVA-T4R.asp The torch is a bit pricey, retailing at around $150 + another $40 for the cradle/recharge unit and adapter, but if you look around you can find it cheaper. I'm having him buy me one of my own, as often times I want to use it and he has it. The illumination easily spans across the entire barn lot and what's really nice is that it's rechargeable, so you never have to worry about the batteries going dead when you need it most.
My DH has a ridiculously expensive tactical light on one of his high dollar guns and I take it off and use it to candle when he's not home lol! He has a couple of nice LED flashlights that work well too, but the tactical light is so light and small I can't resist![]()
