June Hatch-A-Long

I thought so too!

I don't think I ever posted what breed I am hatching out. I am Hatching Austra Whites.

I have 1 rooster I hatched last year. He's a big handsome fellow and rather calm. I am breeding him to CX pullets, and yes he's getting the job done. All my eggs set have been fertile. In a couple days I need to weigh chicks again. I might breed some more this year, right now breeding pens are stuffed with BSL breeds. And my 3rd pen is currently housing CX and replacement roosters for later this year.

I've read on here that you should watch them for two days and they stay on the nest even through the night then they are broody for real and not just practicing. I've also read to just give them a few eggs to start just in case she quits? How cool to get a broody! Of course she went after you set eggs! Lol! Murphys Law! Are you going to let her do a different batch or sneak in some of your bator eggs? Can you do that after a week in?

If it were me, I would watch her for 3 days or so and make sure she stays sitting day and night. If she does and you want to try slipping eggs under her then go for it. I had hatchery stock Welsummers and Cochins that have gone broody. My welsummer sat and was an amazing mom, but that Cochin, sat for 2 weeks then jumped off. So be prepared to put the eggs in an incubator, just in case. Good Luck!

well she decided not to be broody :/ oh well lol. thanks for the information tho!!!

Today is day 8 for me, all 8 of my eggs are developing nicely!
it looks like some others are seeing some nice veining as well. THis is only my second hatch. I cant wait for some chickies :)

I do not remember if I posted about what I have in the incubator. I've got a mixed bag of 18 guinea eggs in there and just added 16 blue, black splash copper Marans eggs today. On Thursday I will fill the rest of the empty holes in with some SBEL eggs. I think there are 11 or 12 spots left open in the turner.

I had to add the Marans today since they will be a week old. I shouldn't have waited so long, but it was trying to avoid a staggered hatch. I will get that anyway, but decided to use these eggs from my SBELs that I finally have penned together to fill the empty spaces just so I have chickens to raise with the guineas at the same time. I just love having little fluffy butts around in the summer.

Yesterday I put a dozen bantam eggs under a broody hen - half of the eggs were OEG and half were Buff Silkies. Then today I put 104 quail eggs in the incubator:

These are Pharaoh, A&M, Tuxedo and Tibetan.
There would have been an even nine dozen, but DD and DS decided to eat a couple of them.

Hoping my BPR keep up laying like they did today. I would have 5-7 dozen sex link eggs to set when I do. Of coarse they will stop when I start collecting for incubation. I just Know it. Really need a 2nd BA rooster. The 1 I have will be sire to a lot of chicks this summer I think. With BA, BSL and Austra-Whites in mind he'll be getting his work out. Just wish he was a little larger but he's great and gentle with any hens I put him with. And not an aggressive feather on him. He even gives up roost when it gets snug (Before I added 2nd roost in his pen.). So still a great sire for any of the chicks I get from him.
This fall I will have replacements or 2 roosters I can swap him out with if he needs a break. And that's just the 2 hatchery ones, No telling how many I have/or will hatch, from him already.

Whoa! My family thinks I am crazy for having 75 egg in the incubator. You have waaaaay more than that.

I just started incubating my first batch of quails ever a few days ago. How do you know if anything is growing in them? I can only see into like 3, but even in those I can't see well enough to tell if there is life...

I was originally just going to only set 50, but since I had the eggs as well as room in the incubator, I simply couldn't resist.

To candle the eggs, I use DH's duty torch (he's a police officer). It doesn't get hot at all, but it's powerful enough to see veins and tiny heartbeats even through the the shells of dark olive eggs and Marans eggs. http://www.niteize.com/product/INOVA-T4R.asp The torch is a bit pricey, retailing at around $150 + another $40 for the cradle/recharge unit and adapter, but if you look around you can find it cheaper. I'm having him buy me one of my own, as often times I want to use it and he has it. The illumination easily spans across the entire barn lot and what's really nice is that it's rechargeable, so you never have to worry about the batteries going dead when you need it most.

My DH has a ridiculously expensive tactical light on one of his high dollar guns and I take it off and use it to candle when he's not home lol! He has a couple of nice LED flashlights that work well too, but the tactical light is so light and small I can't resist ;)

Thanks for the reminder, as I forgot all about those. Now I don't have to wait until he gets off duty.
