Bad thunderstorm this morning shortly after I posted the picture of my first hatched quail chick. We lost all power (lightening hit a transformer about a mile away), so I bundled up the incubators (there are three of them) in blankets and waited, and waited, and waited... The power finally came back on, but one incubator was down to 77°F and the eggs were cool to the touch, so I don't know if I lost them or not. There are only 6 eggs in it and they have only been in the incubator not quite 7 full days. The other incubator has two dozen eggs in it and didn't get down hardly at all, so I'm guessing the great number of eggs helped to keep from losing heat so fast.
While I don't "think' I've lost any of the quail due to the outage, they have been quite slow in hatching. I have 9 quail chicks that have completely hatched out, and there are several more active external pips at this very moment. But out of 100 eggs, I just thought there would be more that would have been completely hatch out today had not for the loss of power. We'll have to see what tomorrow morning brings...besides more thunderstorms.
