June Hatch-A-Long

Bad thunderstorm this morning shortly after I posted the picture of my first hatched quail chick. We lost all power (lightening hit a transformer about a mile away), so I bundled up the incubators (there are three of them) in blankets and waited, and waited, and waited... The power finally came back on, but one incubator was down to 77°F and the eggs were cool to the touch, so I don't know if I lost them or not. There are only 6 eggs in it and they have only been in the incubator not quite 7 full days. The other incubator has two dozen eggs in it and didn't get down hardly at all, so I'm guessing the great number of eggs helped to keep from losing heat so fast.

While I don't "think' I've lost any of the quail due to the outage, they have been quite slow in hatching. I have 9 quail chicks that have completely hatched out, and there are several more active external pips at this very moment. But out of 100 eggs, I just thought there would be more that would have been completely hatch out today had not for the loss of power. We'll have to see what tomorrow morning brings...besides more thunderstorms.

HELP PLEASE!!!!!!!

I have one egg left that hasn't pipped. The rest all hatched by them selves yesterday on day 22. This is now day 23, 24 hours after my eggs first started hatching. Last night i picked up the last egg to check if it was alive and it's tweeting and it's beak is right on the shell around where it's supposed to pip. I made a tiny hole in the shell a couple of mm across, dabbed it with some water, put it back in the incubator and increased the humidity. This was at 1am last night. It's now 5am and still nothing, but it's still tweeting. What should i do? I don't want to start taking bits of shell off because maybe it's not ready, but the others all got out on their own yesterday, i don't know what to do next.......help!!

Also, this egg i was sure was going to hatch first because it was tweeting and rolling about days ago! But i'v not seen it moving since the other eggs started hatching........maybe it got stuck?? I really don't want it to die in the shell! This egg has been developing really well the whole way through incubation and i think was one of the first to internally pip into the air cell.

I know most people say don't help, but you may have to. I helped two from my last hatch. One had wry neck and couldn't zip. The other was too big to turn enough to zip. Had I not helped, both would have died. I carefully took little bits of shell and kept the membrane moist as I worked. When I had a decent size zip, each one managed to finish the job.

Well I had to get home as last night was day 17 and I needed to candle them egg's but the first one I picked up was cracked and chirping ....

If you look at the bottom row of egg's you will see cracked egg's ...

Out come's the first one

We are still waiting on 11 more chicken egg's o hatch ...

And 9 Peking Duck egg's ....

I was re-reading the assisted hatching and i think it's nessesary. My chick has been chirping loudly for days without pipping.

Ok so i started opening the shell more. I worked my way round with tweezers and the top came off. I put her on a damp paper towel and back in the incubator. I'v now moved the other chicks into the brooder so they don't peck her. Here is a picture, have a done it right?

Well the temp and humidity are both holding steady. So so far so good. Won't really know until Saturday when I candle. Which will only be day 4...so still won't let me know for sure, but I'll have an idea. I have both shipped and my own eggs in there, so, I should know if it's working...basically I have my Control group. My eggs have 100% fertility and great hatches. Shipped eggs usually don't fare as well... so I have both in there for my first test.

I'm never shy about helping. I've helped a couple eggs each batch and never had a chick die in the brooder, even though sometimes people say if they are too weak to hatch they won't make it. So not true

You did good but the membrane can be very lightly torn back to let her move but give it a light misting every hour or so or it will dry out ....

Good luck with your hatch
