WARNING GRAPHIC SCARY PICTURES

I just candled to get ready for lock down and had like 6 late quitters. Really late quitters. So I got curious and cracked them open... Most of them were like day 15 quitters..but then I opened the strangest thing I have ever seen so strange I'm not sure I should share it but I have to...I'm now wondering if my chickens took a trip to chernobyl when I wasn't paying attention, because one of the late quitters was a salmon faverolle that was cross beaked, had its organs on the outside of its body, had only one eye and what looked like brain protruding out the other side..and the kicker...it had 4 legs. 4 whole legs. 2 wings, 2 butts... so 1 eye, organs on the outside, crossed beak, and 4 legs..
What in the great beyond could cause that?! I'm now afraid of what monsters might hatch out of the remaining eggs... I've only had like 1 day 10 quitter before...but to get six since the last time I candled...and then to find out one was an absolute mutant now has me very worried.

Anyway here are the pictures. I'm also going to start a thread to discuss exactly what happened here...

There it is. Since these are sex links I can tell it would have been a boy...

Severely crossed beak and what appears to be exposed brain...

A better shot of what might be brain, but definitely isn't an eye...

Just another shot of this horror fun house chick. It's cool in a terrifying way.

Here it is from the back..I would think it was a case of twins gone wrong except this was not a double yolked egg unless both yolks were tiny, and this monstrosity was attached to only one yolk sak... I also want to point out the hen that laid this egg has been acting weird. This was one of the last eggs she laid before stopping, and now she seems to have an egg stuck. Based on this though I'm ready to cull her. She's obviously been eating plutonium.

Close up of exposed organs..
I'm tempted to freeze this and I don't know..send it somewhere or something. All the other early quitters were normal chick's that just stopped developing.

Anyway if anyone knows what might cause so ma you severe and strange abnormalities please let me know.
I've hatched 40 some of these same chicks and not gotten a crossed beak or curled toe on a single one..and this abort had every possible thing wrong with it I think it could other than having a couple of fish fins on it.

The only time I've seen an internal pip was when I happened to hear a chirp prior to having any external pips. I took one out and gave it a quick candle and then out it back and none of the eggs were any the wiser, and every single one hatched with no help from me whatsoever. Only time I was actually able to not open the incubator for the whole hatch... I usually get perfect hatches, but I also usually help a couple along..This time I was solely an observer..

So basically when you hear chirping it is considered an internal pip because they have the oxygen from pipping through to the air sac?
yep.

Pore thing .....

You can refrigerate but the vet schools or where ever wont want it if you freeze it so talk to your local vet .......

Could this be Siamese twins?  I hope the rest of your hatch goes well, how freaky!!!!!!!!!!!  So sorry!!!!   (((((((hugs))))))))

It does look like conjoined twins... 2 bodies sharing a head and one set of organs.. but it wasn't a double yolked egg so at some point the cells were splitting far faster than the chick could keep up with. I was feeling nervous about this hatch for some reason and now I'm super nervous..

Well.. it is day 21 and I woke up to one hatched chick! No one else is pipped and I am worrying.
If this is the only silkie chick that hatches....
Can I bring in one of my 4 week old silkies from outside to keep this baby company? I know she will get lonely if no one else hatches.

Ya you can bring one in to keep your little one company as chicks or any poultry do not like to be alone ...

Wow, that poor chick is the worst mess I have ever seen.

6pm yesterday started our day 21. So far I have 1/10 on shipped Tolbunts and 4/6 my Polish Egger crosses. There are 4 more Tolbunts pipped. Of course they didn't start hatching until late last night, so I was up until 2am, then back up at 3, then again at 5, then stayed up at 8. I need toothpicks to keep my eyes open, but I am cheering on the pips right now.
