Problem -- vendor dropped the ball and shipped our still air incubator slow boat instead of priority mail. It won't get here until Friday at the earliest. We leave Monday morning with things in the care of our wonderful neighbors (who haven't hatched before) for a week. The other tried and true still air incubator is happily humming along and should be fine since its been going for 5 days now. It, however, won't have room for all eggs, unless I have to pull 10 or more of what's in there now.

My purpose of this hatch in the new incubator was to make sure it was reliable for hatching the 100% English orps since they'll be so expensive.

So..

Do I take the test eggs and new incubator on the six hour drive and set it up with us to watch it and see how it does? I've seen eggs get fairly cold under a broody who's out for a stroll and hatch just fine.

Or do I set it up and let the neighbors watch it?

Or do I stuff the eggs in the old incubator and use the new one as a hatcher when we get home?

Ugh!!

MaryRuth, you have a package on the way.

TY! TY!

I know I told Beysy to put me with whoever also, if you're close, you've probably swapped eggs/birds before (right Beth, Alex, and Mary). Either way works for me though.

Of course we do.... Beth came over just yesterday and we swapped eggs & I sent Alex a chicken... LoL

i don't trust a new incubator to hold accurate temp until it's run for 3-4 days minimum without adjustments... so i'd say stuff what you can in the current one and let this one run while you're gone. neighbor can adjust temp if needed up or down to get the temp stable (adjust once a day at the most).
on the other hand, if you'll be gone only 5 days, how old are the eggs you just got? if they'll be under 10 days when you get back i'd say let them sit.

personally, i'd candle all that's in there now, and toss any clears that are more than 5 days along. that would give you more room too. easy for white and light brown eggs, harder on dark/blue/marans eggs.

Yeah, the candling makes sense. I just feel so bad that all of the ShellyGa eggs are still clear

The eggs I'll be getting were shipped yesterday. I'd say they'll be over 10 days when I get back on the 8th.

Judges, I almost had to buy eggs this time as my hens started to play lets find new nesting sites and I found NOTHING for a week. There was some panicking going on for sure, lol.

As for the swapping, this was a lot of fun! I will probably keep doing it . I'm for doing lots of categories, but making no promise about what you get. In my mind its easier to put people together with more choices, as long as they give a lot of options. But I don't really care what categories we use, whatever is easier. I'm also fine whit swapping close to me, but Ive not swapped a lot yet so i don't have stuff from anyone close :).

On a more practical note, I have a local post office that is open until 8, so I can ship my eggs after the heat of the day is over they only have 1 day of travel in the heat on really hot days. they are even open Sunday! So I might be a good candidate to ship to tricksy places as the eggs sit a little less. If I ship on Saturday night, people usually get them in less then 36 hrs, not a ton of shipping time.

The main catagories I have problems with are bantam (not many sending but a lot wanting) and sometimes quail ( a lot sending, not many wanting). Then turkeys are another issue. Everybody wants them but few if any sending them.

well, i'm going to have to sit this next out, unfortunately... still waiting on eggs from 2 swaps outside this one, and then i'm taking a couple months off. we've changed vacation to after labor day, so that helps ease the strain some. by the time we leave everyone will be outside, nobody due to hatch, and my friend can just open coop dors and make sure everyone has feed, and close the doors after dark.
