Hello, I am a first time chick mom and I just brought home my 6, 4 day old, chicks. I am already a worried mom. The were real loud, chirping, in the car on the way home and as soon as I got them home in the brooder they seem to fall asleep. Is this normal? They are so quiet. Is this what should happen? Also, how do I know they are drinking and eating? They haven't gone near it yet. Thanks

Yes, it's normal for them to quiet down when they're new to the brooder and warm. They'll be up and LOUD soon enough. You want to make sure you beak dip them so they know where the water is. They'll figure out the food. Trust me.

Hi - yes, you should dip each of their beaks in the water so they figure out where to drink. It's normal for them to be quiet until they figure out what's going on. Then, you'll have to close the door because the cheeping and chirping will get loud. The distress chirp is very piercing - mine usually make it if they have gotten out of the box (2 weeks old and they can fly short distances) and they wonder where the heck they are. Also, the other chick in the box may give a distress chirp if left alone. They are social creatures and like to be with other chicks. Since you have more than two, they will be pretty happy soon. Sleeping is also normal. They are babies and tire easily.

They are also laying with their heads all spread out, please see the picture, are they too hot? The thermometer only reads 85 degrees Fahrenheit, and I was told that in the first week it should be 95. It's warming up since I just turned on the light when they got home.

Yes its all good mine did the same as well. I have 10. 6 welsummers and 4 pullets. They are alot like human babies as far as sleeping. My chics would eat some then do faceplants into their bedding. I thought a few times they had died. Tired babies. Most have had long journeys via UPS. Once they get a bit older and rested you will feel better

Thank you everyone for making me a little less nervous. When you don't know anything then everything seems wrong. I think I have beak dipped all of them and they have all seemed to find the water once, I think. A couple of them have already found the food and started eating but not all. You are correct about the face planting. They keep doing that, one even fell asleep with his head right at the edge of the feeder. Very cute... Well they are all asleep again so I am just going to leave them for awhile. Thanks again...

I love it when they face plant it's hilarious! I've got a little polish that is three weeks old and still always falls asleep standing up and falls over. It's adorable!
