I have to add to my post
I was taking care of an entire house full of animals when I was a 7. cats, dogs, rabbits, fish. As I got older the horses and llamas joined the family. I was often asked to take care of the neighbors dogs when they were away on vacation.
Then I choose to go to a Aggie high school. During HS I was responsible for not only my own horses and pets, but those at school and a part time job. Upon graduation I held a nearly full time job, plus took care of my horses and animals. After college, during which I worked and competed I got married and STILL managed to take care of my horses, other pets and house. PLUS hold down a job taking care of a stable of over 20 horses and ponies.
Now I run two small business( one with growing success other one brand new) run a household, am a mom and STILL manage to take care of my horse, my cats, my dog, my rabbits and my chickens.
When I was a kid my dad told me that the animals come first. That they were put here for us to take care of. Abused and neglected children that survive have a voice. But animals never can actually "speak" to us about what they need or want.
21 is NOT a kid. Unless he has some developmental delays that were not mentioned he needs to be held responsible for his actions. My 5 year old knows better than to leave the run open or leave them with no food/water or such.
As far as employees and coworkers that pull that BS. Shame on the boss for not seeing it and doing something about it. Shame on the parents for not teaching their children a good work ethic.
