Just dosed our Brahma with Tylan 50. Questions...

Jeff,

Have you considered fowl pox, specifically the wet variety. Clinical signs very similar to those your describe. It is vectored often by mosquitos.

I appear to be battling the dry form in central Missouri. Mosquito pressure on my birds tremendous at night this year, more than I have ever seen.

Regardless of pathogen / disease, treatment with electrolytes in water should help. As with other disease possibilities, antibiotics can be used. If fowl pox the problem, then antibiotics would be controlling secondary infections.

I have used Tylan on my birds and have come across the same thing.

Once a day for 3 days; once every other day for 3 doses. .25 cc for bantys, .5 cc for standards. If your Brahma is as large as the one I have seen .75 would seem right.

I have used it both ways with the same results, they got better. Usually after 1 dose, but I still gave the other 2 doses.

I have also read on a turkey page that you can give it to them orally, but it seems to me the dosage is 3x's what the injection is. They do this because Tylan does a lot of tissue damage, it is also a very painful injection, but it works. When I recently moved my turks outside they got sick, I gave them one shot and 2 oral doses every other day. I just gave them the last dose a few days ago, but so far they seem fine. (fingers crossed)

Good luck!

I have used .05cc for standard birds 3 to 5 days. If it is respitory it will come back if the birds are stressed or get sick. Yes they carry it for life too. Raspy sound chest, bubbles in eyes and usually one side sinus swells up. Some time tylan works but not always. If you dont plan to have an open flock then its not a big deal but if you sell eggs or chicks you will pass it to the next person.

Hi, as for dosaging, TYLAN50 is 1.0cc banty 1.5cc LF ONCE a day for 4 days if symptoms still exist then continue for another 3 days. ALL the birds have to be give medication if they were in contact with each other and it is much better to give meds IM [injection]. Yes the flock will be infected for life{ sort of like thyphoid mary] You can bring in another bird, but you should not let any leave. Hope that helps.

As for what goes in the eyes, NOTHING THAT IS NOT LABELED OPTHAMOLIC [for the eyes] PERIOD.

As for what disease it could be, so many things out there....it would be best to see what happens with the antibiotics if they recover or not. I wish I could name all the respritory illneses that are out there, also I can not give you this cool link I have cuz I am out of town on a borrowed PC.
