My BTW Japanese hen that has been broody since she literally first started laying has finally got one over on me! I've busted her several times with her hiding nests, and as of a few days ago I thought something had happened to her. She'd been gone for about 4 days and I couldn't find her ANYWHERE. I figured she'd made a new nest, but my DH and I had been over this place with a fine tooth comb and had come to the conclusion that something had happened to her.

So imagine my surprise when I'm out feeding this a.m. here comes "Slow Mama" (what we call her---she's short and slow

) eating like she hasn't ate in days. I watch her for about 5 minutes and then follow her as she proceeds to fly up in a big cedar tree, hop up and up and up branches, and position herself back on an old birds nest

Now here's the question.....obviously if she hatches these eggs (and we've got no clue how many there are), the chicks are going to die as they attempt to leave the nest and fall 12+ feet to the ground. So I need to get a ladder and move her, right?

I gotta go take pics!

I'd just leave her be till you know she is close and then keep an eye on her an the nest.
Perhaps put a net under and around the nest?

Yes please post pics! A mama chicken in a tree with her eggs, she IS desperate, you HAVE to let her go broody! I like the net idea. Maybe she'll carry them down the tree by the scruff of their necks, like a mama cat. Now that would be a sight!

wow! how cool! Such a smart girl to have figured that out! You HAVE to take pics and post them here ASAP! And then, I would personally move her. I really think those babies would be dead ASAP as soon as they hatch and hop off the edge of the nest. Your girl wants to be a mama so badly! Make her a nice, quite spot and let her do her thing! And keep us posted with pics and updates!
