Just had my big huge tree topped off/ my future peafowl tree

Yep.. wait till he sees.. 3 more being added next week.. LMAO// and well the tree is behind the run area.. I just want to extend the run up and around it.. and well, he hasnt noticed the tree yet.. due to it being kinda hidden behind the run area already.. and when he notices it.. I am going to say oh my goish.. look at what that last storm did!!!!!!!!

very nice! that's what we did w/an old wild plum tree in our pea pen. Unfortunately we didn't have much more than the stump left but we fastened a long board across it & they love to perch & preen on it.

I have a big climbing antique rose climbing up my "grow-out" pen, where they used to live -- they pulled most of the leaves off of it but left the branches alone -- their "pruning" was a great job as it is just loaded with beautiful tiny rosebuds right now!

But I do have an arbor to the entrance of the run..yep ..that is where some new climbing roses are going

My climbing rose is planted on the outside of the pen & runs up against a corner. It provides nice shade in that corner during the summer. Usually I only use that pen for young chicks until they are old enough to go in with my main laying flock, but it was utilized for the peas when they outgrew the outside brooder, until they were ready for their big pen a couple of months ago.

I want to find some non-clumping bamboo for the "permanent" pea pen, along w/some other plants.

There are lots of roses that are completely or nearly thornless. Here are a bunch from one rose nursery that specializes in mostly antiques, using the search option "thornless."

Being in Northern Virginia, you're probably in USDA Zone 7, which means that you can grow almost all the old rose classes (except for some Chinas, Teas, Noisettes, and some random species hybrids). I didn't go through all 95 roses that came up under "thornless" but I bet there are LOTS in that group that will grow by you.

I love roses, especially the ones from before the hybrid teas were bred, so if you want some info on them, feel free to PM me anytime.

ETA -- it wasn't 95...it's a little less...I assumed each page had 12 listings except for the last, which had 11, but then I looked through them and saw that there were fewer. There are still PLENTY to choose from, and when I glanced through the varieties, I'm thinking that just about all will grow in your area.



ETA -- again -- I realized that selecting "thornless" brings up sub-categories, of which "thornless" is one. So the link I posted the first time included those roses with decorative thorns. I corrected the link, and now you'll see five pages of "thornless-thornless" (haha) roses.

You should have seen me reading up last year on the rose garden forums..I was obsessed

Problem son many of the roses I love I want to bloom all summer, the one time bloomers drive me nuts and yet those are the most gorgeous

So I really need to combine a couple. ....
