Just had three big dogs that tried to get into our chicken coop..help

I guess it'll come to electric fencing - just had a deer go headlong into the wire. Thought these things could see in the dark! Time to re-jig the solar lamps...

I'll vote for the electric fence, too. I had the same thing happen, but with 2 dogs and they did come back the next day (very early morning). We had set up the electric fence the evening before and it sent them running. Haven't seen any sign of them or any other dogs since! Good luck!

In reply to brownysfp: I make every effort to find the owners of chicken killing dogs. I don't always ask for money (it depends on how sorry the person actually is). I do, however, insist that they come up to help me bury the body. My "chicken graveyard" is in the hard-pan by the side of my driveway, and digging a hole through that is not an easy prospect.
I figure that them having to watch me cry while they try to dig a deep hole is ample punishment!

hi,
i know thats a stressful time. feeling for ya!
I had this happen and the dog got in and terrorized the hens. it caught one and pulled out all her tail feathers. the other ones flew up and over the fence to escape! smart lil things!
i was catching them all day.
the good news is...........
they all recovered!!!

Also, i would make a flyer and put in every mail box in your country area. make it nice wording and ask for help keeping the dogs away.
dogs have this crazy instinct to catch birds.

another good thing.... our dog is now in harmony w the hens!! she doesnt chase them any more!!!!
it took about 2 months of repeating, keeping an eye out and every time she tried i scolded her. now she doesnt even try!!!
so u can do it too!
good luck!

We tracked the owners through the tatts on the dogs. They weren't remotely sorry, just shrugged and said it had happened before (therefore it'll happen again) and gave us the address of their insurance office. Needless to say the gendarmes didn't fall over themselves either.

Do you have animal shelters or pounds where you live? Could you catch the dogs and haul them to one far, far away? Could they just quietly disappear? Any way to modify SSS? You obviously can't shoot, but is there a way to make it so you can do something, then shovel and shut up? You may have to get creative.

Oooh! I hate people who aren't sorry!
Is it legal in your area for dogs to run?
You could try paintballing the dogs. If they come home time after time with polka dots all over them perhaps the owners will start being more responsible.
