Just hatched chick with big bubble on neck

Yes, it was just air, no fluid that I recall.

Just because I'm a moderator doesn't necessarily mean I know everything.

I just have had that experience with my chicks.

I wonder if its like trapped chicken gas that gets ingested with the yolk, or if its something that happens during developement. Like an air bubble from shaking an egg before incubation.... hmmm, interesting.

It's because of birds' respiration systems. We get that issue fairly often with injured wild birds in my wildlife rehab group. Using a fairly large sterile needle, gently poke it and it will deflate. It's not that big of a deal. Just don't reuse the needles or there's a risk of infection.

I had one worse it was bigger then her head, don't worry she lived.
firsts rub olive oil on it (it softens and sometimes it goes down just from that) then take a sterile needle and puncture it, if there is fluid let it come out, the fluid could drown her.
just keep an eye on her.

I've had chicks hatch like that. My best guess is it tried so hard to get out that air got in under the skin from the respiratory system some how. That said, the handful that I hatched with air pockets all survived and the bubble went away on it's own from hours to a few days later. No worries.

This one was a day late and i did have to help it out of its shell. Maybe it does have something to do with trying like heck to get out of the shell. Maybe their little respiratory systems "leak" a little bit under stress?
