Just Hello from another Pigeon Lover

I've been on the site talking about chickens, so I thought I'd say hello to the Pigeon section. I've had Pigeons for 20 yrs. Homers mostly, but also a few American clean leg Fantails, a couple of Fancy Roller types, and in the house I have some Ring Neck Doves.

They are super cute! I really want to get doves someday! are they much harder than chickens?

Pigeons, what I posted above, are awesome. They do require more time than chickens, but are more entertaining. You can't fly a chicken from 600 miles away (homers), you cant rely on most chickens to independently brood their offspring with no human intervention, you can't join chicken clubs that span over the us (storage I haven't seen any) you can't race chickens with other members, alle who enjoy what they do and make a great community, etc. But pigeons have ALL OF THESE! Ask any questions on care that you have.

You have one that's a unique color, too. What is that called, Pencil, Slate?

I have had the Blue Bar, Blue Check, Splash, Grizzle, White, Black, Reds like Trenton Red & the ones they call Silvers (but to me I call them Red Bar or Red Check), and of course the nice White Flight Splashes & Saddles. Now this past year I didn't breed ONLY particular pairs, I let some just grab the mate they liked and go for it, so ended up with 3 very unique ones.
1 pigeon is a soft pale beige gray...depending on the lighting when I take the photo, pale gray or pale beige, when it was a baby it looked like a tan teddy bear.

Another bird is a gorgeous silver, the darn camera does not do this bird justice, he is silvery shimmering gorgeous!

A 3rd is black yet outside in the sun you can see black bar markings.

Pretty cool, aren't they? Love their personalities, too.

I agree, while working with pigeons is awesome, when I was racing, training for flights was time consuming, I'd drive 50 miles 2-3 times a week, then once races started, at least 30 miles 1-2 times per week, keeping them in form. But I have to admit, as far as cleaning goes, chickens require more time & effort there, simply because they poop alot more lol. Also when a pigeon poops it is like a marble, it falls through my grated flooring, dries out and I can clean it up like sweeping up marbles about every 6 mos. The grated floors keep the pigeons feet clean. I know people talk about deep litter method for chickens but I just can't let any poop go ignored in the chicken coops. I'm at least scooping their poop under the night perches every morn. I've only had chickens 5 years, had pigeons 20. Chickens are a backyard bird, Pigeons are athletes of the sky, born to fly.

Dad and I made them, after I bought 1 section made in Belgium. They are great for pigeons. (Not so great for chickens)

are you taking about the one that is nearly all gray? If so, it a red ash spread:

Yes they are! Hawks or not, mine fly.

Thank you! For the set up do you have a pen for at night and let them fly or free range (sorry I’ve only had chickens)
