I have 50 chickens living comfortably and happily. My birds are food providers and food, and while I don't have much of an emotional connection with them, they are properly taken care of, as I want my food to be healthy. At the end of year 4, they are culled and prepped for freezing and eventually the crock pot. I cycle through 12-14 new, and 12-14 retired per year. I keep track of age via toe punch.
This year instead of buying chicks at the farm store I'm going to hatch them since I now have a rooster for the first time after ~10 years.
A little ditty about chick days.
And the daily haul.
