Just how loud are hens?

If you go to buy a chick, look at the breed. Some breeds are quiter than others. For instance. Light Barhama is a "quiet" breed. It also depends on the chicken too.

Yeah my big brown egg layers don't even sing the egg song, and they're pretty quiet. My lightly built white egg layers, cackle, bawk-bawk, and do the egg song. They make their demands and accomplishments well known. Haha. My Red Star and Australorp are the quietest. The Hew Hampshire Red is the loudest of the brown egg layers.

My little dainty and pretty Golden Lakenvelder is the loudest one I have, and she doesn't even lay eggs yet.

It must depend on the chicken more than the type. We have a Golden Sex link who sings a loud egg song before she lays if someone else is in the box she wants and after she lays. We have two Barred Rocks who don't sing the egg song but are very vocal especially when they want you to give them treats. They are not usually very loud but are very talkative. We have two Silver Laced Wyandottes who both sing a loud egg song and one of them goes on & on with it. It is LOUD! Our BlackAustralorp doesn't usually sing an egg song but she is top hen and does have a loud alarm call that sounds like the egg song. She sounds the alert anytime she thinks there is a threat to the flock. We also have one quiet little EE who sings a quiet egg song every once in a while but will chase me barking for treats! We have had no complaints from our neighbors. One of them has a dog that barks constantly when we are anywhere near his fence and another one has a dog that barks constantly all evening. An egg song every once in a while is music to my ears compared to the constant dog barking!

So how did you come out with having the chicken in a HOA? Just curious because we are going thru the same thing right now. Thanks

We waited to get chickens until the HOA rules changed. :) A friend of ours also wanted chickens so he got on the HOA board and thankfully the rest of the board was reasonable and they changed the rules.

My brahma and speckled Sussex are the loudest chickens in my flock. I love the breeds, but no way would I get another of each because of their noise.

I live on a 4 acre lot, which the houses are spaced. My neighbors can hear my flock too and make comments. Those two hens squawk all day long! It does get annoying, but I do love my hens!

I thought free ranging would cure the noise, but I was wrong! Now they go up to the property line and squawk. They are both very sweet birds, but VERY noisy!

Both my EE's are quiet.
