my name is kayla and I have 14 ducks.. I have 3 rowans, 5 pekins, 1 khaki campbell, 2 call ducks, and 3 anconas.. I am currently dealing with my pekin drake being in the veterinary hospital.. hes been there for 3 days now. I took him in when I noticed he couldn't make any noises and he was constantly mouth breathing.. they have just now realized he has subcutaneous emphasema.. they let the built up air out from under his skin and are now waiting to see if it comes back.. I sure am glad they didn't send him home like that cause they had planned on me coming and picking him up this evening with some antibiotics and anti inflammatory meds.. they said he has 2 broken ribs and I cant even think of any way that he could have gotten that injury! my other ducky friend mentioned maybe a hawk had attacked him and its the only thing that makes sense.. because no other predatory animal is able to reach my flock.. but anyways I just wanted to say hi and tell you my situation and hopefully I can get some feedback from those who have had ducks with the same issue as mine is in now.. have a nice day!

Hi! Welcome to BYC. I’m so sorry about your baby boy. I pray he gets better soon. I’m slowly starting to get into ducks now. I have a buff and Pekin drake, a black Swedish and blue Swedish hens and two mystery ducklings from TSC. Don’t be worried about those bills everything will work out I promise!

well I atleast have time to pay it back.. a random person saw my post about my duck on facebook and he offered to put his credit card and care credit on my vet bill and said to pay him back in small payments until its paid off.. that was an absolute BLESSING! and because I wouldn't have been able to ever get him even seen because I have no credit for a card and hardly ever have any extra cash.. ive always wanted some Swedish ducks they are so pretty! the anconas that I have are just ducklings and I just got them so im excited to see what they will look like as adults!

I WOULD REALLY APPRECIATE SOME ADVICE.. BUT YEA, my duck has this subcutaneous emphysema from a broken rib.. I just want some advice on what to do next. yesterday they leaked the air out and not even 12 hours later he once again swelled up with air under the skin.. so. they gave me 3 options: 1. they could let the air out and send him home and hope he doesn't do it again. 2. they could put a stent and cathedar in him so the air can be released easily if he happened to blow up again. 3. they can do surgery and go and find the hole that is leaking air and then close it and then be done with the problem.. im just worried about any mortality rate and the anesthetic and I really just want some more opinions.. money isn't an issue and because a nice man on facebook offered to cover the vet bill and let me pay him back overtime.. just tell me what you would do if this were your pet..
I don't have any advice or experience with this but I do hope your boy gets better. @casportpony might be of some help. 
I have dealt with this, but not from a broken rib. Ask the vet this "if this was your duck what would you do?"

Another idea, you could ask the vet if they could teach you how to let the air out.
