Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to our flock. Raising chickens is a wonderful experience for children. My granddaughter (pictured in my avatar) loves our chickens. Where children are involved, I would definitely recommend going with breeds that have a well deserved reputation as being calm and gentle (potential lap pets) such as Australorps, Orpingtons, Brahmas, Cochins, Sussex, and Faverolles. If egg production is a priority, Australorps are the best layers on this list (a Black Australorp holds the brown egg laying record with 364 eggs in 365 days), and Cochins are the worst layers (although they are the best brooders and mothers). Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Whatever breed you decide to get, good luck with your flock.

I'm glad you joined us!

Many breeds of chickens are suitable for beginners. I especially recommend Wyandottes, Australorps, Easter Eggers/Ameraucanas, Orpingtons, and Sex-links. All of those breeds tend to be hardy, friendly, and good egg layers. The beautiful colored eggs of the Easter Eggers/Ameraucanas can be a bonus, too.

Breeds to probably stay away from include "Mediterranean-type", white-earlobed, white-egg laying breeds like Leghorns, Minorcas, and Andalusians. Those breeds are often flighty, which makes them prone to flying away or injuring themselves, and some are aggressive. Of course, temperament varies with each bird.
