First off, I love the story of your little one carrying the chickens one by one into the house. I bet that was cute, but messy! It always tickles me to hear about kids getting into the chicken keeping with their families- it makes me think of being at my Grandmother's as a kid and being entrusted to take care of the flock when there!

Hopefully now that you've moved, you'll be able to set aside time here and there to build a nice, secure coop and run. It's good that you've considered the security aspect before just flat out buying chickens again. Thanks for being willing to share your experiences and grow with the BYC community!

I am Bet and just joined in to help with answers if I can. I will have a few questions myself later on. I use to own a yard full of Rode-Island Reds. My little girl, (at the time when she was only age four,) had gathered our hens up in her arms from the back caged area and carried them one by one upstairs to her bedroom. I was washing dishes so I didn't know what was going on till some clacking from the birds. Their squawking came through loudly from the walls.
Since leaving that house and moved to another state, I focused on work to raise my children. Years later, determined to live in the country again, we packed up everything and moved back to Tennessee. I don't have a coup or place safe enough to keep chickens, however, if I did I would look into the possibility of having Reds again and obtain a small flock of Wyandottes and Jersey Giants but only females, (as males are more aggressive.) These types of birds are people friendly, they're vocal, and make good pets.
