I had the sweetest silkie boy that always ran up to me when I approached the coop, and he always wanted to jump up on my lap to cuddle. Today I had him with me in the back yard for a minute and I ran in the house to wash my hands. When I got to the sink (within 30 seconds of leaving him on the back porch), I looked out the back window and watched a hawk fly off across the creek with the silkie in its talons. I'm soooo sad...

I had the same thing happen to my splash cochin rooster. He loved to be held and would always run up to people for attention. The hawk came back and killed my lavender mottled orpington cockerel also. He was too big to carry off so the hawk fed on him on the ground for 3 days. I believe it was a young red tail. Then this fall a falcon took my best black cochin rooster.

I'm sorry this happened.

I had two of mine carried away also. Fortunately, we found one a few days later alive. The other was not so lucky.

Make sure you secure any other birds because the hawk will come back.
