My mom always went to the local feed store. This way we have never lost a chick in transport. Also, then you don't have to race to the PO in a panic. They're always so helpful and nice, even when she went and ordered only two female ducklings each of a zillion different breeds. So they can usually get a large variety of breeds. It's worth checking into! Plus sometimes you can get good deals on older chicks. Once week old chicks were only $1.50 each! They desperately needed to sell them. No minimum purchases either. Anyway, I guess I'm not helpful because I've never ordered chicks online, but I wish you the best of luck!

Where I live, there simply is no local feed store that sells chickens. There just isn't. I suppose there are feed stores way out in the sticks of the state somewhere, but I don't know where, and a Google search didn't reveal any that stated that they have chicks. There aren't any of those Tractor Supply stores that folks on here talk about buying chicks at.

Buying livestock and shipping them USPS not only serves people in far-flung rural areas, it serves us city dwellers who just don't have access on a local level. I have found only the most basic of chicken supplies locally, and will probably order some items online when we set up the coop outside. I haven't even found that 'grit' stuff yet. In the urban post office I work at, we have delivered chickens, a pair of geese and live bees to city folks.

This being said, I am awaiting a call from my city's post office today (I hope!) for my first order of chicks!!! (from HealthyChicksAndMore) It's very cold and I am worried-but that's the chance I took ordering this early. Figures, it was in the 50's last week but only the 20's now.

Not downright ugly, but ugly, yes! I got mine from MPC on October 26th. I love 'em, ugly or not!
