I'm a chick newbie too and right in your neck of the woods! I have 4 buff orpingtons and 4 silver laced wyandottes coming from Meyer at the end of March.

I wish it was me ordering I've been cut off by hubby.Meyers was a good choice I ordered 26 girls last summer only 1 boy and they all made it alive and are doing well.

That's funny because my husband says that I am about to be cut off from getting any more chickens.

I could never order just 1 of each bird! What if you have losses? not that you will! The predators are fierce around my yard though and I had losses last summer but free range completely! I found buying more birds, raising to pullet size and selling off the less adapted really makes the herd. AND selling chickens to my friends and family made them love chickens!!

I got a rainbow special from meyers last summer and wow what a rainbow the only double is a austrolop I have 24 different kinds of birds love them all.

Luv, Luv, Luv my DH... he is always telling me that these birds need to pay for their feed or go to freezer camp... Then he ups and orders me 100 new birds for Christmas! Go figure!!! My babies arrive around the 31st from McMurray which is closer to me than Meyer.
