Just processed out at 67lbs

flocksalot, you may want to verify this and ask a game warden or someone. It sounds to me like you can take care of problem dogs.

This is from your state's website: http://docs.legis.wisconsin.gov/statutes/statutes/174.pdf

174.01(b)
A person may intentionally kill a dog if a domestic animal
that is owned or in the custody of the person is threatened with
serious bodily harm by the dog and the dog is on property owned
or controlled by the person and:
1. Other restraining actions were tried and failed; or
2. Immediate action is necessary.

Grr stupid dog! And that is a stupid contractor for thinking it is ok even after being told No dog!

You must not have a hawk problem in your area. I tried to have the flock out this summer and lost half of my layers to hawks. I saw a family reunion of hawks circling our land while the rest of the flock was out and nearly pooped my pants!

So sorry to hear about your turkey.

You could tell Mr. Dry Wall Guy that your turkey had a VERY contagious disease and you had to put him down immediately because you noticed that your turkey was foaming at the mouth, blood was coming from his eyes and green stuff was shooting out of his ear and he was having seizures. You can say that you took him to the vet and the vet said that he had XYZ disease contamination to the 10th power and that the turkey was contagious and that any predator (wink wink - "his dog") that "would have possibly" attacked him and bit him (wink wink) would have been IMMEDIATELY affected by the body fluids (blood, etc) and would possibly die within 72 hours of the attack. See if you get any reaction from that story when you tell him.

Well that would be all fine if we were right there and saw the dog going for the turkey, but all we found were dog prints and punture wounds. As his was the only four legged animal over there and it had just happened as we found the turkey still thrashing around a bit(I was about 100 feet away), and when I got to him he had just died. The statute really applies to problematic repetative animals according to the sheriff. He said if we had a dog contuniously coming over and killing our chickens we could then shout it, but we are also required to have filed a lose report to back us up before we resort to something like that. We found this out a couple of years ago when a cat killed one of our chickens. I thought the cat had died over the winter as I poison rodents and it was hanging around, but just found out it ran into my neighbors house this summer and has never left. Cat appears to have been a domestic that someone dropped off and was really hungry. Dont want a cat on my property either. I would rather trap and poison. I don't think the dog went over there to kill one of my turkeys he may have just been playing, but in the process he mauled one of my babies. I am sincerely lucky they didn't all have heart attacks. It's exactly why I told the guy no he could not leave his dog even tied up on my property. My turkeys are not used to them and BBW are prone to heart problems. A bad scare can kill them. That in no way lets the drywall guy off. No way no how. That was my Mr. Blue and I'm quit sad without him. So is Gracie she now feels the need to pick on Chester and Big Boy. She really liked Mr Blue and I think she is angry that he is gone too.

Well the guy didn't show up until after my husband and I left for his Dr. appt, but I think he should be done mudding today. That means if my husband lets him he will paint and be gone by Sunday.

Oh and today there was NO DOG when I got there. My husband did spend about an hour and a half up there at the house after he dropped me off at the shed, so when he gets home from shopping we will see what was said. I know my husband was still really ticked about it. He might hate my poultry, but he loves me and he knows how much i put into my birds. He knows because he complains about it incessantly. Can you imagine being jealous of a turkey? He also knows how much money I make from selling eggs, meat, and garden goodies so he doesn't pay for mine or my sons birds. We do stick him with the electric bill though, but he gets free meat and eggs out of the deal.

I know even though he doesn't like it he will protect my turkeys. That's why he spent a morning cleaning his guns.

We have lots of hawks, but are very vigilant in chasing them away when they get the idea of chicken for lunch. The roos also alert the girls and into the tree covering they go. We have a tree lined drainway that divides our property, so the poultry hang out in there over the spring summer fall. Over the winter they have access to one of my greenhouses, but still spend much of their time in the horse shed or chilling out in the hay shed. I've seen the chickens way out in the fields and as of yet we have had no losses, but one last year from a cat. Knock on wood. The chickens and the horses are on the lower side of the property, and the turkeys, ducks and geese are on the upper side near the house and near the gardens. The hawks won't bother the turkeys once they get to gianormous size and I've never had a problem with the ducks or geese. There are a bunch of hawks that hang out in the horse pasture. Hopefully eating moles, mice, rats, voles and if there are any snakes please god let them be eaten too! I don't know if it's legal to shoot a hawk, but I would have my husband on patrol if we had problems with them.

Well my husband is probably right in saying that he just really loves his dog. I say I really love my turkeys, but I don't take them places. I wouldn't shoot the dog and neither would my husband. He just likes to get his guns out as he gets these strange ideas in his head that he's protecting his family. He was really leary about hiring the guy in the first place and having him there when I would also be there. I just laughed at him. I'm like dude I have the 4 wheeler and I know how to use it. I could have that guy drug through the messy horse yard so many times I wouldn't even have to clean it. Wow what a concept. Hmmmm.
