I saw 67 pounds and had to look into this thread Thanks for the picture of Tom. Sorry about the loss of your 67 pounder.I noticed contractors taking dogs with them.Very annoying. I would never think to bring a pet,kid,friend... to work with me.

I had no idea about the gashing of girls,and benefit of boots. Will do that if I ever get tukeys. They are huge!

Most turkey breeds don't get this large. The ones that do probably aren't breeders. The BBW and the BBB cannot mate naturally due to that delicious breast they are carrying around. They may try to breed, but that hugh breast causes them to carry their weight different than a heritage breed. That difference can and does in many cases cause injuries to the hens. I've even heard of toms falling off a hen and getting hurt. They also are prone to hip and leg problems relating to their weight. Artificial Insemination is how the broad breasted are bred. I've never heard of one succeding in mating, but hey it could happen. Just not on my farm.

I use the boots when the hens start squatting. When they learn to not squat for the boys the boots can come off again. They think of me as the top tommy and will only squat for me. Not even my husband gets a squat.

The girls have been laying all winter and the toms haven't had boots since early November.

If you are thinking of raising turkeys they are fun. Nothing like skittish chicks. But if you're looking for breeding birds to renew your flock then you should go with a heritage breed. Some of them are just so beautiful and can get to some pretty impressive sizes too, or there are smaller types for those that have smaller needs. I myself love the leftovers. Heck we can eat turkey for a long time on some of these guys. And try some of them smoked! The best sandwich meat ever.
