In the Brooder
Welcome to my microflock. I have two Leghorns about a year old, an old Golden Comet of indeterminate age, and a Black Cochin Rooster of indeterminate age.
They get along well in their big backyard, with a few exceptions. Starting with the Roo and down through the pecking order they are Sergeant Pepper, Chili, Clove, and Bay. Sergeant Pepper LOVES his Chili Queen, the Golden Comet. None of the hens let him mount, but Chili loves that rooster. They follow each other everywhere and Chili grooms his little feathers.
Clove keeps trying to work her way up the pecking order and suffers a bruised comb and bald butt on the regular for it. As soon as her comb heals she's back at it. But it never does her serious harm and her demeanor is certainly not affected. Even Sarge will peck her at dinner time if he thinks she's gonna start something with his beloved Chili.
Sarge had a horrible case of scaly leg mites when we first got him, but he's clean as a whistle now. For some reason he's always been a drooler since we got him (about 7 months ago). It concerns me, but he's otherwise fine. Good crop condition, normal poops, just that he always has moisture at the corners of his beak.
Chili laid two lash eggs at the beginning of the year and we threw absolutely every medication and herbal remedy we had at her. She survived the salpingitis, but she'll never lay eggs again. Doesn't keep her from sitting in the nesting box every morning, but she's not broody, has perfectly normal poop and vent health, just keeps the habit of sitting. Her very best friend, Basil, another Golden Comet, died about a month ago. She and Sarge both grieved over that.
And that's the flock. The strange, tiny, flock. In the middle of town.
