Hello BYC. I'm just starting out on my chicken adventure in Hudson, TX. I have ordered 12 Buff Orpingtons that should be arriving tomorrow from Ideal Poultry. I have my brooder ready to receive them and am starting work on modifying a 10x16 portable building into a 1/3 coop 2/3 storage arrangement. The storage part will store all my chicken accessories and Bee supplies. I'm excited and anxious for my chicks to arrive.

Make sure you have a heat source and feed them Medicated chick starter

Thank you. I have already bought the medicated starter and I plan to use the heating pad tunnel idea I saw on BYC. I have a heat lamp standing by in case the tunnel appears to not work too well. Tomorrows high will 96 degrees and I worry how they will fare in the mail.

They should be ok as long as they don't leave them out in the sun. they will most likely ship at night and deliver them in morning if a one day delivery.Sometimes it takes two days depending on we're your at. The chicks are fine for the first two days as they are living on the newly absorbed yolk. Good luck with them.

Medicated feed is not all that good..imo.
I can help prevent Coccidiosis but it also can cause problems since it blocks the intake of thiamine.

I would never use it...just my 2 cents though.
