Yes, Dawn will kill mites on pretty much anything. We used it on the chickens when I was younger and I am using it on my pet rats now. Good stuff!

Apple Cider Vinegar is also good, and makes fur, hair, and feathers soooooft.

just wondering if my chickens eat the grass I put sevin dust on, will this infect their eggs. will the eggs still be ok to eat?

Sevin isnt too bad compared to many pesticides. just look up the LD levels
http://www.bayercropscienceus.com/products_and_seeds/insecticides/sevin.html

FYI its people who recklessly spread pesticides about their property that damage the environment more than farmers do.

if you live near water do not use sevin or near bees it kills bees fast.

Safety

Carbaryl is a cholinesterase inhibitor and is toxic to humans. It is classified as a likely human carcinogen by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA.)[4]
Oral LD50:
250 mg/kg to 850 mg/kg for rats
100 mg/kg to 650 mg/kg for mice

the larger the number to kill the "safer" the product is.
my dad uses it in the orchard and i have grown up playing in the orchard all my life. no bad effects ever. course dad has a pesticides license and knows the proper rate of application.

Malathion is another pesticide my dad uses and its more "safer"
Malathion is classified as slightly toxic and carries the signal word CAUTION on the label. The acute effects of malathion depend on product purity and the vehicle of administration (5). Thus the LD50 for rats ranges from 480 to 10,700 mg/kg and from 775 to 3,321 mg/kg for mice.

i am about 50 kg and assuming the metabolism rate for rats is similar to me i would have to ingest at a minimum of 12500mg or 12.5 grams to have it kill me (Sevin) Malathion would be 25000mg or 25grams. this is using the highst ld listed 480mg/kg

Sorry for the stupid question but what is DE? Also, I heard of some stuff that you can spread on the ground to help control flys, anyone know the name?

well my question is still not answered. I do not know about all the levels of chemicals in seven dust nor do I know about what the chemicals even are. I am not asking about the environment. Im asking about the eggs my chickens lay after eating the grass that the dust is on. should I dispose of the eggs for a time? or go ahead and eat them. Is this also safe for my chickens?

Sevin is my pesticide of choice. It does kill everything I want killed with just a very light application. Used sparingly in the right places it will control what you want controlled without killing things you want to keep. An earlier post mentioned it killing honeybees; I have a very healthy population of honeybees in my herb garden, but I don't use the Sevin on my herbs. The herbs take care of themselves when it comes to pests

I do use it in my chicken pens and coops to control lice, fleas and mites. It works very well there, I haven't had an infestation of any of those for 30 years. I also use Sevin for dog areas to control fleas. Again, it works great.
I have never had any ill effects from Sevin usage. The key is to use it properly and NOT indiscriminately. Just like anything else.........
