Hey Madrooster,

Welcome to the asylum.

The waiting through lockdown is the hardest part! It drives me crazy! But the waiting is so much better when I can go through it with everyone here.

Just to help you along, here is a pick of my first from this hatch, just a few minutes out of the shell. It is a blue large fowl ameraucana. I hope it has nice cheeks when it dries.

Woohooo bring on the
babies. !!!!!'
last night my last chick hatched. 4/5 hatched. That's pretty darn good if you ask me. I have 2 chicks and my cousin has the other
2 chicks at her house, so I diddent get pics sorry. Though this comming up Tuesday I'm heading to the feedstore to pick up 15 chicks so maybe I can get some pics with the new chicks and the hatched chicks.

Yay so egg-citing! Glad to here you have to action now. Sadly I just got done cleaning and putting away the bator. The
last chick hatched while I was sleeping. But I have 2 vidoes of 2 of the chicks hatching.

Yay, you! What kind(s) are you getting from the feed store? I think I will only end up with 2 out of 5.

Turns out number 3 had only internally pipped. It was quite this morning, so I opened the shell, but was to late to save it. It hadn't fully absorbed the yolk sac either, oh well. I candled the other 2 and didn't see any movement, but I left them in there for a while longer. If I don't see any movement again tonight, I will toss them. On the bright side, I think my chicks turned out to be lavenders, I expected blues and blacks, so lucky me.

Aww, cute chicks, I especially love the darker one with the chipmunk type pattern, those are soooo cute

. Love your varieties! I currently only have two coops, I was trying to keep our selections few and simple so I wouldn't need so many breeding pens. But things just keep getting more complicated, and our oldest chicks are 2 months old.
gig.gif
I have way more colors/varieties going on than I intended.

Well, I did egotopsies on the quitters, it frustrated me and bummed me out. I had two that had pipped internally then died!

I hate that, and I have had that every hatch

I was so close to having an excellent hatch. I wish I knew why! My temps were good, I hatched exactly on the due date. My humidity has been good. Maybe it is just because of the shipped eggs. I am such a perfectionist I want to keep hatching eggs until I get a perfect hatch rate, I think I will have to wait until I can start hatching my own eggs for that.

Oh well.

oh im sorry

well 2 is pretty good. I wonder what went wrong? hmmm... I had one egg that was internally and died in this hatch, I think mines shell was a little to thick and sufficated?

I have one pretty good size coop. and I have a mix flock of all different breeds, If you look at my signature thing at the bottom you will see all my breeds.

I would love to just have a nice mixed flock like yours. I grew up on farm, and to me chickens are about utility, they lay eggs, provide meat, and help control the insect population (I love free ranging chickens). But we are getting back into chickens for my daughters 4-H project, after not having any for several years because our own puppy killed our last flock. The big thing in 4-H now days is exhibition,

so we are trying to keep some pure bred stock for breeding future show birds. We also plan to sell eggs, and I plan to grow them organically and eat some of the extra roos. So I have one buff silkie hen, a pet quality silkie 2 months old maybe a pullet which is an interesting non standard color, one lovely 2 month old partridge bantam cochin pullet, 3 EE's 3 wks old, 4 purebred Ameraucana chicks 3 wks old - one blue, one splash, 2 black, and now 2 day old lavender Ameraucanas, oh yeah, and Barnevelder hatching eggs from a pre- pay order due to arrive in the next couple of weeks. Oh and I forgot I have black and wheaton/blue wheaton ameraucana eggs still in the incubator.
gig.gif
I need several breeding pens already.... This so wasn't the plan.

Things got complicated from the word go, and I am turning into a hatchaholic. Oh well, time will tell.
