Just what does Expensive Eggs Mean? Is it relative too..

I was watching a UK ebay auction for six choc orp eggs about a month ago and they ended up going for £300. I wasn't intending to bid, but with three days still to go they were sitting at £80 and I was just interested in what the finish price would be...

I recently bought ten marsh daisy eggs. They're very rare, were presumed extinct till being rediscovered in the 1970s and are now classed as an endangered breed, but I got them for £18 including the shipping costs. I suppose anything's only really worth what someone is willing to pay for it...

Right now on ebay there is an aution for 12 tufted rumpless araucana eggs at $ 90.00. You have to remember that there is a high mortality rate with tufted birds so while the auction is for 12 you will possible end up with half or less hatching out. Now I bought 4 pullets for $100.00 and none are tufted which I knew and for me the birds are totally worth it. But when you look at possibly 6 maybe tufted or partially tufted birds for $100.00 if you buy the eggs and then what I paid for 4 non tufted well started birds that began laying eggs two weeks after I got them yippee!!. The price kindof evens out.

If I had the money I would definately get eggs from that seller. Her eggs always sell well and high but she has beautiful birds. For me the price would be well worth it. I am hoping she will have more for sale later maybe when I have money.

So it just depends on what you are looking for and if you can justify to yourself what you spend.

That auction, with shipping included, ended at almost $700.

I have seen some chicken auctions get rather high and in my recent search for Sebatopol Geese I about fell over with the cost of eggs and goslings but I soooo wanted some so I stalked the auctions till I won some the seller sent me an extra so I got 3 then I was delited when another fellow BYCer sent me 6 eggs now I am praying they hatch....its all in what the buyer wants and is willing to pay.

That's what I think too. I like to buy eggs on e-bay because I have a really fast satellite internet connection and I can snipe the auction at the very last second and get some great deals.

just as long as those ebayers can pack worth something, my pendesenca eggs came smashed up, leaving the eggs a goey mess because the seller packed in a way they could move around in the box and smack into eachother. Lets just call that one single scrawny runt of a pendesenca I got out of that hatch a very expensive bird.

Got some sebastopol eggs on ebay though, seller packed great and gave me an extra, 4 out of 6 are developing

Actually it ended at exactly 700.

Eggs are usually expensive because of rarity, supply and demand, and quality. I doubt I'd ever see expensive Barred Rock eggs. . .

But the average Black Copper Marans dozen goes for $60 because of the rarity and egg color

The average Tolbunt Polish dozen goes for about $170 because of rarity, beauty, and the challenge of keeping a fertile, vital flock.

And of course there are the new things like Lavender Orpingtons and Ameraucanas, Silver Laced Brahmas, Millie Fleur Cochins, etc. that also go for a pretty penny due to their new color.

But remember - It's all about what the buyer is willing to pay. I of course was willing to pay insane amounts for the eggs I've purchased and hatched.

Those silver laced brahmas were incredible, and obviously a project that they spent many years working on. I just bought some light sussex chicks from green fire farms. That was the most I've ever spent on chicks. I got to see some of their birds in person and had to have them.

That's the only time I've ever had to have something and was willing to pay a lot for them. $700 is too rich for my blood, but I envy those that acquire those birds.

I never quite got the Maran fad. . . and I guess it has tapered off?

I've had nothing but really good luck with e-bay egg sellers so far, and I've gotten some great birds at phenomenal prices - but I only buy from sellers with 100% good feedback rates. If I really want the eggs, and the feedback rate is below 100% I read through all the feedback and see what went wrong before I make the decision to try to snatch the auction.

I'm sorry about your Pendesenca eggs!

I've had sellers replace an entire batch of eggs because the post office screwed up and the eggs were delivered late - I hope yours were either replaced or refunded.
