Juune Hatch-A-Long

I think she's been sitting for 7 days but I don't know!!!
I'm soo glad that she has soo many!
She is a mutt but she is very big so she can fir many eggs under her body!

Anyway I have another problem...... Chicks will be coming out of my ears soon!
I have 5 broodies!
1 Is in the chicken coop with 15 eggs!
2 The other is in the chicken coop with 21 eggs!
3 One is in the field with 16 eggs!
4 Is in the rabbit hutch with 19 eggs!
5 IS in the garden with 23 eggs!
So many eggs and the are all due in a 14 day period! Its going to be hard! But I will love it!!!

I just raise chickens for the joy of having them in my garden. I don't keep all the roos. I do also fall on love with them but I swap them with my neighbours got hens. I swap one adult roo for two hens.

Wow thats an awesome set up. Around here it would probably be 2 roos for 1 hen!!

When do you all candle your eggs during the incubation? Do you still do this with broodies incubating?

Yes, I will be candling them on day 8....they are fairly dark brown so hopefully I can still see inside ok. I did crack the last ones and thye hadn't developed at all. I'm not sure how long they went before incubation, but the farmer made a comment that if they were stored in cool temp they could go months.....this went against what i had researched but figured he would know.....my new ones are very fresh so I have high hopes!!

Mizz-I cant wait-I think I will try candling and weighing mine Sunday-which would make day 7 or 8 (put them under the hens Sat afternoon). I weighed all of mine and marked them-put it all into a spreadsheet LOL Can you tell Im excited?

Around here roosters are very valuable. They get eaten by our neighbours. They say our roosters taste very good.
I candle my eggs on day 8 if I now the date the hen went broody. If If i don't know then I candle 2 - 4 days after I find the hen!!!!

This morning when I went out at 6:30, there was an egg on the floor in the broody pen. I know it was under her when I closed up the coop at 8 pm. The eggs are on Day 3 or 4-how much impact will this have on the development? This hen has 9 eggs under here and is a large Orpington-she should be able to handle that many correct? (Shes a proven broody hen)
