Q: I saw the Q&A on arthritis and your recommended treatment (aspirin). I have been giving my 45 lb black lab/pointer 250 mg of buffered aspirin w/ his food each day and it seems to help. I've heard that enteric coated aspirin is better than buffered. Do you agree. These tablets are harder to cut; would 325 mg be ok daily?

A: k- There have been one, or possibly two, studies done that indicate that enteric coated aspirin does not work well in dogs. Due to the differences in digestive processes dogs do not seem to be able to routinely digest the coating off the aspirin and many of the aspirin tablets are found whole in the stool. Obviously, if the coating isn't digested the aspirin is not effective.

The dose for aspirin is approximately 10mg/lb of bodyweight every 12 hours. If less works, I'd use less. But if you need to, you can give your dog a whole 5 grain aspirin tablet twice a day with no problem.

Enteric coated aspirin is usually not recommended in animals, it's so hard sometimes they cannot break it down.

Whats buffered mean then? I'm clueless.. as usual.

Buffered is a coating that breaks down in the stomach.

Enteric is coated and cannot break down in the stomach - can only breakdown in the intestine due to the lower acid ph of the intestine.

So enteric is different than buffered then? Darn Grits... dont know what to tell you...
Do you have a store near by? Even a convience store.. Most small stores will carry aspirin of some sort...

Tell you the truth Red, despite years working as a drug nurse, I don't know the difference. I think buffered is formulated in a way as to be easier on the stomach. Enteric coated means it has a hard shell like M&Ms.

HorseFeatherz is right, buffered is more powdery and breaks down in animals better than enteric, which is like hard candy.(it can collect undigested in stomachs) Maybe if you talk to a vet he/she will tell you it's OK to crush it, but Grits check first, not sure if that's a good idea either. Better yet go to store. Does DH take baby aspirin?

Can you give him a buffer with the aspirin? what would that be? baking soda? I really do not know. Where is the handy dandy vet byc-er?
I would try a low dose of aspirin, and plenty of food to absorb it if it is too acidic for him tummy.

Thanks y'all. Guess a trip to the local stop and rob is in order. Looks like I'll be the one going. Looks like DH is going to sit in front of the TV all day today, as opposed to sleeping all day like he did yesterday.

Can you tell Gritty is not in the best of moods?
