When you provide support to a customer coast to coast, the hours can get long. I think I was 56 or so when I could no longer do the late nights and early mornings. I think part of that was I spent two years where late nights weren't required and early mornings just happened.

When I was much, much younger I could go 2-3 days without sleep when it was necessary. But if I did, then I would crash hard afterwards. When I was in Korea, I mastered the combat nap. 30 minutes of rapid REM sleep and then up and good for many more hours, rinse and repeat.
