Ok, here goes... I'm reviewing my status with both my registrars and I needed one more class from riddle to graduate or three more from Maryland... All three of the Maryland classes were on the schedule, but the last two were like 8 months out. So I took the one Maryland class that was available as the riddle registrar was trying to figure out how to get me through sooner. The last riddle class was Airport Design. There was only one instructor in Europe qualified to teach it (in Spain) and I was the only student interested in the class.

So the registrar got a great Idea... She convinced the head office to let me do the course independent study (with coaching from a qualified coach locally) and then I would finish the course in Spain, take my final and turn in my final project to be graded in Spain. Only one small problem... Back then the only way I could afford classes was I only paid 10%, the Air Force picked up the other 90%. Not true for independent study. You had to pay 100% up front and then turn in your grade slip to be reimbursed. I know you're painfully aware that college isn't cheap. It wasn't back then either... So we were back in a pickle. No way I could spring for the cost of the course, and she already had the course materials. So she came up with another bright Idea... She'd just give me the materials (8 weeks early) to transport to Spain for her. Once in Spain I could register for the course, take the exam and turn in the project. And yes she worked out all the logistics and got the local coach on board as well.

So I got the materials, studied my butt off, bugged the hell out of the coach and it was all coming together. For my final project, I had to pick the worst Airport in the US and redesign it keeping aesthetics, psychology, throughput, and air/ground traffic at the forefront of my redesign. Now you have to know that there was no internet back then and instructor bios were not readily available. So I picked JFK as the airport to redesign. It's so poorly designed that even if I did a bad job I could still get an A. Mind you... 4.0 GPA and last class is high risk. My coach had run me through dozens of quizzes and and had a LOT of input on what I was lacking in my final report (btw, he knew something I did not)... So then the fateful day comes. We assemble at the hanger for deployment to Spain. My mind was sharp, I was ready for the final and my final project had been thoroughly proofed by my coach and I was ready.

So here's how it worked back then... We assemble at the hanger at 4:00AM. We get into lines and present our orders to finance people who then give us cash for food and/or hotel depending on what our orders said. I was staying on base for this deployment so just food. The good news was the cash was like $40 more than the cost of the course. I figured I could make $40 work for a week or two until I got reimbursed for the course. As soon as I landed in Spain I ran down to the ed center and registered for the course. And scheduled my final for the next day.

My final went off without a hitch. It was annoying to set in the back of the classroom while he taught a different class and take it, but I aced it. And turned in my final project. This was Wednesday and he assured me it would be graded by Friday. Friday came and no grade... Monday I called and the best they could suggest is meet his class on Wednesday. Wednesday I showed up and he introduced me to his class (different class then the one I took my final with) as the unfortunate student. To which everyone laughed. He waited until the end of the class and actually made me mentor some of his students during the class before he gave me my final project. Did I mention that the final project is 60% of the grade? He handed it to me in an envelope and promptly left.

Mind you that I'm already on three meals of ramen per day. I open the envelope and no grade slip (need a grade slip to get reimbursed). Worse yet blood red all over the project. And nasty comments. Turns out he was a principal designer of JFK when they were preparing for DC3's. So the next time I can meet with him is Friday. OMG I'm going to starve to death before I get this figured out. So he made me sit and interact with his Friday class before he'd address my question. Finally at the end of the night he was willing to address my question. What's My Grade? His response: It's on page 3. I scoured that page and no grade, but then removed the staple and in the top corner was a tiny little A. Monday my grade slip was ready and I got the 90% reimbursement and finally got to eat again and have a lot of adult beverages as well. OH! and more important than food, I had GRADUATED!!!!!

My room mate took me to dinner and bought me a few drinks to celebrate. He also found excuses to feed me during the lean times. He turned out to be a great friend who also helped me solve a spider bite problem in my house. He was like two blocks away and I'd never met him. But we all were getting eaten alive at night. He suggested bringing a wolf spider into the house. So we did and the bites stopped almost immediately, but the wolf got big.
