This is just sad we let these breeds get like that* :/ I'm glad someone is working on improving pugs though

Btw here's another good one with lots of pictures of the retromops (click them to make them bigger)

*yes I know boxers aren't quite as bad as some of the others and I love them, actually love most of these breeds, but still, not fair to them

Breeds definitely have changed over the past century. Some are definitely for the worse. I often wonder if it's the reason for the sudden surge in mixed breeds. Hybrid vigor can save a dog from problems.

Many of those breeds I wouldn't keep due to the health problems. People breeding for show are often some of the worse for physically destroying dogs. You are always told to seek out a reputable breeder, but often than means inbred show bred dogs that are physically a mess. They are usually pretty and have wonderful temperaments, so it's a shame they let ribbons dictate their breeding instead of what's right.

Boxers thankfully haven't continued to get a shorter muzzle, so for the most part they are good with breathing. Unfortunately there's a lot of cancers and heart problems in boxers. Something that could be bred out if only people waited to breed and were more knowledgeable.

Yeah, it's really sad. Many have certainly changed for the worse. And a lot of breeders are too blind to see it. And that could be but I think a lot of people also think breeders, even good ones, are cruel or stupid to buy when there are so many in rescues, feel they are "taking away" homes or whatever. I don't think they are taking away anything but I do think some breeds and breeders should be questioned. Intentionally breeding for health problems seems cruel. Even the double curled tail which is so highly desirable is the result of a spinal defect which I never knew.

And yeah exactly!! I think one of the articles actually mentioned that or maybe it was this one which I didn't link

The fact that most "BYB" are breeding more moderate, healthier dogs yet are considered bad examples of the breed.... it's messed up.

And yeah, their muzzle is not as bad but still worse than it was and shorter than some dogs. But yeah, so many show dogs have major health problems and defects. Like cancer in Goldens. And as the one article said, you can health test as much as you want but if you intentionally breed for other health problems, it really doesn't mean anything.

I think the one article said

"It’s like telling a brittle asthmatic their hips are good enough for a marathon or a hike."

Completely stupid. Great hips don't matter if you can't breathe.

And actually idk if I linked this one

I personally don't want to deal with other people's messed up dogs, so I personally prefer puppies. I also want a predictable dog as far as size, coat and general temperament. So I like certain breeds. At some point I may have to switch to taking on older dogs, but for now that's not something that interests me.

I like certain breeds like the rat terrier because they aren't messed up, but totally enjoy the mug of a short snout dog, but I don't want one that is too short. I've seen many messed up shih tzu that couldn't breathe, with dried up eyes. There's always fat crippled labs, and don't even bring up German shepherds. There are good and bad in every breed.

I unfortunately can't police people's poor choices and behaviors. I can only seek out what I'm wanting, and avoid extremes. Humans haven't evolved enough yet to put others before themselves in life, and definitely not to put animals before themselves. In general of course, I'm not talking about everyone.

People definitely need to stop buying dogs from pet stores. I don't understand that at all.

I like breeds, they serve a purpose and help me select a compatible dog for my situation. I buy my puppies and keep and care for them their whole lives. I don't contribute to the throw away dog society we live in.

Cudos to those that rescue. I personally don't want that currently. Most rescues come with "baggage" and anxiety.

To each their own. :hmm

Am I making sense? A bit tired. :old

Yeah, you're making total sense and I agree with everything you said, which is why I'm gonna get a purebred for my next dog, but I do understand wanting to rescue and some rescues can be great and seem to be more grateful/appreciative and loving sometimes, like they know they've been rescued. And not all of them necessarily have baggage, sometimes people just move or divorce or something and there are purebreds in rescues but yeah, I definitely prefer starting with a puppy myself and you can mold them into what you want from the beginning and start work immediately. Which is especially important for me if I wanna do a sport or even seemingly simple stuff like building focus or distraction proofing or house rules or whatever, it's easier to just do it from the beginning. But some rescues are great. Like Libby and Franklin. They have really lucked out with them. And yeah I do hate fat, dysplasic Labs :/

Been a minute since I've been on this thread lol maybe we could bring it back? I'm in PA atm. But I never realized how close Chicago and also WV are to here
