We are new to backyard chickens, our chicks are at least five weeks old. We have placed them in a movable coop which is on the ground in the backyard. My question is do they need some sort of box that they can get into until they learn to roost.
Many thanks
I love the posts they are so helpful.

A belated welcome to BYC! :frow

Is this like a movable pen with a coop or hutch at one end where they can get shelter for the night? If so, no. If not, yes.

Ours always just sleep on the ground in the coops or hutches, which are horse bedding pellets, until they learn to climb the ramps to where they can perch. (Silkies).

Hi, thanks for responding. My coop is a metal frame with a tarp over top of it, it is secured by bungee cords, They’re are also tarps around the sides with roosting bars and a nesting box.
I have other winterizing tarps to go around the rest of the coop to make it completely weatherproof when need be.
It was a little more expensive than I wanted to pay but it works out great as a shelter. it also has a doggie door so they have free range to an acre of land. My question is because they’re so small and they cannot get off the ground to perch, Should I provide them a spot to get off the ground?

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.

They need a predator proof coop with proper sizing and ventilation. What you have for them isn't going to fit the bill at all. If you leave them out in that overnight you may come out to all of them dead or just plain missing.

Hi! I agree with the advice above! There is also a Coop Construction Forum here to post in or peruse, but we'll be more than happy to help with coop suggestions. If you are okay with sharing pictures, it might help to see what you are working with, plus we love to see chick/flock pictures always (no pressure, though)!

All the best to you and your new chicks! This is a great place to learn about chickens; we're so glad you joined! Welcome to BYC!
