so I’m having problems with my chicks. They have runny stools (brown/orange) in color no blood. Besides that they can be fine one day and dead hours - a day later. I can check them before I go to bed and all will be active and acting fine and in the morning I can find 1-5 dead. I have given them medicated chick starter, corid, and ivermectin. Nothing seems to help or make any kind of difference. Right before they pass away some will act weak and die. When I do find one acting weak I cull it and bleach the brooder. Trying to stop this before I loose more and no luck. Has anyone had this issue before.

How old are your chicks? What is the temp in the brooder? Have u tried nutridrench in their water? I start mine out w nutridrench in water and medicated starter...I was having a problem similar to this but once I used those two things it stopped...I also realized I had my temp too high for their age and it is better to wean them off the heat as soon as you can bc they tend to get sick faster w the heat warm for weeks.

2x ...
Age of chicks?
How are you heating them?
Temp in the brooder?
Where'd you get them from?
Why are you giving ivermectin?
Where are you located?
Are the "runny stools" consistent or once in a while?

Stop the Corid & Ivermectin ... Get some Nutri Drench ... Continue with the Med Chick Starter ... Check the temp in your brooder ...

Chicks/chickens have what's called a cecal poo, it's soft and stinky every 7 - 8 poop. It's normal. Color depends on what they're eating. If your brooder is too hot, it will cause issues. Your brooder should be set up so the heat's on one end and there's enough room that the chicks can move away from it when they're too warm. Post a picture of your set up so we can see what's going on.

It has to be something contagious!!! I used the ivermectin for worms and mites, and the corid Incase it was cocci, I have 7 different brooders going right now with chicks from a day old to 5 weeks old. I use a heat lamp on one side of the cage so they can adjust from one side to the other if they get to warm or cold. My newly hatched chicks that I have now setup in new brooders on the other side of my house are not having this issue. And their poop is consistently runny with my infected chicks I have not used the nutri drench but I will pick some up today on my way home from work and try it.

You dont give chicks ivermectin that young. It'll have adverse effects on their nervous system, besides, chicks dont get worms that young and mites should not be an issue if they came out of an incubator. If they were hatched by a hen and the hen was infected with mites, then yes, it's best to dust both the hen and each chick with permethrin dust.

I suspect that you're dealing with cocci and the corid isnt having any effect controlling it.
You're going to need a sulfa drug to kill the cocci. With an outbreak this bad, you're going to need a prescription from a vet to get sulfadimethoxine and treat all your chicks. You'll need enough to treat your chicks for 5 days. The vet will provide you the dosage.
To slow the effects of the cocci until you can get the sulfadimethoxine, give the chicks milk orally via eyedropper. The milk will coat the intestinal lining slowing the effects of the cocci. You still have to treat them with a sulfa drug and sulfadimethoxine isnt as harsh on their system as other sulfa drugs. Do not give any nutrients or supplements to your chicks that contain thiamine, read the labels.

As for your brooders, they need need to be sanitized with an ammonia/water solution. Bleachwater wont kill cocci but ammonia water will take care of the cocci.

Hi; I was initially taught about raising chicks by an old MN farmer, and he said NEVER feed medicated feed. Keep everything clean, dry, and so the chicks can get closer to or farther from their heat source. AND for every quart of water put about 1 tsp Apple Cider Vinegar (NOT "Apple Cider 'Flavored' Vinegar"). I never lost a chick yet. . . many years raising 'em.
