Keeping a rooster

Well, my suspected rooster started practicing crowing today. Can I leave him in w/ the hens or does that automatically mean fertilized eggs? Any way of keeping him around?

Yes it means fertilized eggs. There is no difference nutrition-wise in a fertilized vs. non-fertilized egg. You can't taste a difference and unless you know what you're looking for, you can't see the difference. Just collect your eggs promptly and refrigerate and there's really no problem.
We go thru about two dozen fertlized eggs a week in my house.

Will it make a difference if it's a Black Australorp impregnating a Buff Orpington?

Only matters if you plan on hatching the eggs. The hens will lay the same eggs irregardless of the rooster. It's only the chicks that come out of the eggs that are different.

SO TRUE!

It would only be a problem if you have a very large rooster with a banty hen. If and when you decide to hatch chicks the resulting chicks would be mutts. Perfect for backyard flocks.
