BrahmaMama, ya, the hen knew what she was doing this time but she is not a good ma hen, although she is a good broody, really sticks to the nest. So I took the egg rather than put it back under her. I figured I would hatch it out in the house. I take all her babies because once they hatch she has nothing to do with them. Her other egg hatched last night and by the time I found out the chick had frozen. She would not even keep it warm for 2 hours.

my DH who is a microbiologist, laughed ruefully when I told him your story ...

he mentioned that when egg protein "goes bad", not only is hydrogen sulfide produced, but also two other protein products ....

I guess just like humans, some animals are cut out for it, and some aren't huh? I have my very first broody right now, in one of the pens my husband made, in the garage. So far so good, but with this being her first time, and we are only at day 4, I won't get my hopes too high. Of course, there's not much else to do in the cage either...

I use putrescine to keep my cell cultures alive as part of the minimal media. At least I can't smell it at such low concentrations. I should look into what it does.

I've been a baker for over (cringe) 30 years and have gone through A LOT of eggs! I have only been exposed to a rotten egg twice in that time, I consider myself quite lucky! To have one broken in your arm pit...major YUK!!
