Keeping Chickens Free Range

I am proud of them, I believe they tagged along behind the rest of the flock since they have been free ranging with them. It's my first time with baby turkeys and they hang close to the baby ducks it's too cute.

"Hey, are you guys done yet? I'm about to drop one right here!!"
Not to interrupt the chick topic, but when i saw this, I HAD TO TAKE A PIX! 2 inside, one waiting and THE RACKET they were making!! Mind you, there is a straw filled 3 hen hutch AND another carrier, just like this one, also available. Chickens, go figure....

Ha ha! I've had FOUR stacked in a nesting box at a time! Two facing one way and Two facing sideways. Two empty nesting boxes available. They all wanted in the same box! Too funny!

Inside that box is a golf ball and in the beginning, I left eggs inside so the other girls caught on, THIS IS WHERE TO LAY. Yeah, I've DONE my share of hiking though....
NICE looking Appy, BTW, Mossy... Good luck!

Hi all,
I have 28 hens and 5 roosters that I've raised from chicks, I was scared of free ranging them due to the hawks and neighborhood dogs. I was also a little scared that they might not all make it back to the pen to lay their eggs and I would have an Easter egg hunt each and every day. So far I've lucked out with the predators and the egg laying. I have to laugh when I look out and see the hens run from one side of the yard to the other to make it to the nest on time, I haven't found any eggs outside so far. It only took a couple of days of walking them back in to train them to come back in at night, now they walk themselves in each night and all I have to do is close the gate behind them. I'm looking to add to my flock with both adult and chicks, so the free range experience my be changing soon.

For those of you that free range your birds. I guess this question is more for those that don't have an automatic coop door. What do you do on days when nobody is home at dark to close up the coop?
